Do your cards still play the latest games at good settings? I ask because my 6800 still manages all the games in the orange box with almost everything on @ 1280x1024, I know they're not the most demanding games...

i play mine at 1440x900 res with 7900gt
COD4 plays at high settings with 4xAA. it does freez slightly in the demanding levels but not too bad.

i've not tried anything else which is demanding as i know my card will fall on it's face if i tried. so once i get a new card i'll then invest in the better games etc

I'd not buy a 7900 card now, you can get better for your money and a lot of 7900 series appears to fail and have other problems too.

Well.. if you buy say a 4870 or GTX280 now, in 2-3 years it will not cut it, will be obsolete deffenitly.

in my opinion if you want the best from games then you need a decent card.
My 7900gt was a great card over 2 years ago but now it can only run the top games at basic settings which for me isn't good enough. I benched Devil May Cry (can't find the relevant thread with my results) with the tools in my sig and at high settings it struggled big time. My GPU is seriousl holding me back with these new games.

if you want the best out of the games you need a decent card to run them! unfortunatly my 7900gt isn't such card

better than my 6800

Yes its better but unless you can get one for about 10 quid you are wasting your money.

The 7900GT's have a high failure rate from what I've read and people who I talk to having there 7900's die on them. If you are going to buy something now at best a second hand 9600GT is best.

the only problem i have had with mine is the fan spins constantly at 100%.
luckely i found a bios fix which dropped it to 40%.

but there is no way i'd recomend getting one now. Not with whats on offer

my 6800 idles @ around 50'c with 100% fan

To put it short and simple, you'd be making a big mistake getting a 7 series card now.

If anything an X1900 would be the best from that gen, they where better than the 7900 series, better IQ and performance but they are still going for 50 quid, for that price you can get an 8800GT second hand.

At that price range aswell either an 8800GT or 3870, the 8800GT is superior, but last I heard you where not allowed to upgrade??

I struggled along with a 7600GT for a few months - As soon as I got paid ordered a new card. Didn't expect it to but wouldn't play GRID even on the lowest settings..

i can still play a few games at 1920x1200 with a 7900GTX. Half Life, Doom 3, Battlefield 2 etc. Some newer games don't play so well though. Will be getting a GTX280 soon though so that should sort that.
Haven't really gotten any newer games lately though.

For polygon throughput the new cards arnt that much better than a 7900, its when the games use shaders (or AA) that you start seeing a massive performace hit on the older cards.
