8800 320mb - Where to next?

the gx2 is eww.

is is sli, so the performance isn't optimised for everything. it has two chips, so it's hot and horrible.

gt a 4850 or a 4870, depending on how good a boy you have been :p

OK thanks. I have been offered a 9800gx2 for £140 plus my 8800.

But might change my mind if thats the case

Hot and horrible !!!! a GX2 uses about 10w more than a 4870 as it is based on the revised G92 core. Vs the GTX280, a little more at idle but 20w less load.

GX2 is a good card, faster than both the 4870 and GTX280 in most common games. It can fall down when SLI isn't supported but until the release of the 4870X2 it was the fastest single card solution.

Worth a punt, negotiate on the price if you can though it sounds fairly reasonable

Negotiated on price and am going with the 9800gx2. Only time will tell if I made a mistake.

Yawn, another 9800GX2 bashing post.....

Own one?

They're actually pretty good. GTX280 performance for a bit less? Yes please.

Have you altered the speed of the fan and whats the noise like?

Should have said in earlier post I went from a 8800 gts 320 to a 4870 and after some initial teething problems (Namely the ATI Tray Tools beta) causing BSOD on shutdown I have a nice stable rig again. I was using the ATT for fan control but the BSOD has killed that. I now use the CCC xml to set fan speed to 34% you can hear it but I game with headphones on so its not an issue but even when browsing its not that much of an iddue for me but if I get fedup I'll just create another profile and set fan sped to 29% at thats its no louder that my stock intel fan on the heatsink.

As for temps at 34% idle its 51c under load it hits about 63c so its fine my olf gts was hotter and I had to runt he fan higher than the normal 60% it defaulted to.

I play cod4 at 1680*1050 with 4*AA everything on high textures on extra and (havent played creek yet since fixing att) my fps are 91fps solid vsync off. on my 8800 at this res with lower setting I was topping out in the 60's and regularly dropping to the 40's
