Spec me a 3k car (Golf, Focus etc)

Nobody has suggested a Ford Saloon - they are hatchbacks. The problem with the Golf is the 1.4 and 1.6 is not a reliable car and is going to cost you money just to keep it on the road.

I have to disagree about the 1.6 golf, it has been utterly reliable for my mum over the last 4 years, but saying that if you caned it everywhere it may be different.

It's well known that the gearbox on the 1.4 and 1.6 Golf is very weak and its a case of when it will fail rather than if it will fail.

What the hell would make some moron think that putting a little electric motor in the air intake will make any difference to a car that already has a turbo. Insane.

If he paid £1300 for a stainless exhaust.... oh dear. I just hope its not got a 4 inch pipe on the end of it.

The car might be ok, is you take off the 'mods'. Capitalise on some muppet ruining an otherwise good car with easily removable tat.

Edit/ Do I spot some footwell neons. :p

I've never understood why a VW badge holds any more credability than a Ford badge.

They're both the same class of brand in my eye.

German peoples car. Anglo American peoples car.

I'm a noob when it comes to cars so I have to go with what I've heard and I'd heard that a VW would be more reliable than a Ford. This is good news if it's not true!

EDIT - I'm also surprised at the insurance quotes I'm getting with 2 litre Mondao's and Audi's, they're coming out not much more than a Golf.

It seems that VW has a "snob" factor (due to high pricing?), I just prefer the body styling and looks of the VWs over Fords in general, tbh, otherwise I'd probably have got a Focus.

Car size is not equal to insurance cost.

Nickability and likeliness to crash are.

It's not true. It was in the 80's and reputations stick. Today, infact, the opposite is more likely to be true.

Exactly my point and exactly why I recommend better cars. Although an old Audi is more likely to be trouble. Remember a £3k Mondeo is the 2000-2007 model, a generation on from the 94-00 model of A4 you'd get for the same money.

The plot thickens....

I'm really liking the look of A4s, plus insurance isn't that much higher than on a Golf. Anyone got any experience of these? I can spend £4k.
