Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870 i have just bought this never ever has a ati card always nvidia ive loved my 8800 GTX but i keep reading all this reviews about the 4870 and how good the card is with AA.
hope i made a good decison as £186 is a lot of money:eek:

Definately, 4800's hardly take a hit with AA. :)

my first ATi card hope the drivers arent like they used to be years ago:eek:
as im a newbie to ATI what best drivers do i need loadsa is it the 8.8?
also have ATI got like a Expertool thing where you can control fan control etc as i dont like rivatuner tbh

You should not be disappointed, as said above more aa for virtually no hit. Gainward have a ATI version of expert tool out now!

Im using the 8.8's fine here, but a lot people are having problems with them so they've gone back to the 8.7's.

Expertool for 4800 fan control is here :-

I don't think that allows the fan to go below 50% though (which will be a bit loud ;p), but you can also make a profile with your own fan speed, i have one with a setting of 36% which is quiet.

Sorry to semi hijack, but how much of an improvement at 1440x900 will I see from a 2900xt to one of these?

can you elaborate please
Relax most are fine. I have the same Powecolour model and it absolutely destroys my old 8800GTX so performance wise it should be around 20-35% faster plus AA with give little FPS drop whereas the 8800GTX struggles with loads of AA.

I would not however start trying to flash the bios or anything like that as you are asking for trouble and its not needed anyway as stock is fine for most games the difference is minor anyway.

They do get hot by design but you can live with it. Only thing worth doing is get an AC S1 Rev2 VGA cooler + 120mm Fan as this lowers temps by 30-40C and you can then overclock to get around 140.9GB/Sec of bandwidth which is only 1GB/Sec less than a stock GTX280.
