I didn't see it at the cinema as I thought the comics were superbly slanted and I felt that it would be difficult to translate them to the screen.
But nevertheless, the 2-disc DVD was only eight quid (plus discount) from Asda so I thought I would give it a shot.
Firstly, there were a few departures from the comics. There always are with such things but most of these just...Didn't make sense. Character animosity instead of devotion which does nothing other than provide a hook for a five minute distraction at the start of the film which could have been better spent setting location details and/or detailing the vampire discovery of the place.
Despite this, the film is very well paced for the most part, getting into the swing of things with aplomb. However, a bit more tension in the first act could have worked brilliantly instead of 'wait...hang on...what's that...what's happening there...****ING HELL! VAMPIRES!'
The second act is delightfully visceral though. Genuinely innovative and never hackneyed.
A couple of plot holes were a bit offputting...
"We have to move..."
Why? You're fine where you are, you have rations and you're hidden.
Plus the whole setting fire to cold crude oil thing...
But the outstanding part of the whole flick had to be...The sound. Great use of 5.1 and I adored the score...Probably because it could have been nicked from 'my' archives. Seriously - if any of you have wondered what I mean when I say I don't let people listen to my music, watch this film with a decent audio setup and you'll be immersed in the kind of stuff I make when I'm in a chillout mood.
Overall - worth it. Probably the best modern Vampire flick since Night Watch...In fact, I'd go as far as to say that it surpasses the Russian film...And that soundtrack...sublime.
