Kitting out a gaming den ~ need suggestions

But why the need for all the seperate devices?

360/PS3 will play DVD's/BRD's, stream media from your PC (rendering HTPC semi useless), Sky is a waste of time (paying for extra adverts \0/) and no need for a CD player either tbh.

lol didn't answer my question. 5500 are limited with no upgrade or connectivity options. Even a £100 av amp has better connectivity that the Logitechs.

Lmao, I read the thread title as Knitting out a gaming den.

Dam I so tired :o

That's a cool wife, enjoy your "man den"

I don't care, I use a switch to use my PS3 and 360, I will possibly move away from the 5500's next year to separates when I have more money, but for now they fit the bill nicely.

Besides, I can't see myself buying any more stuff I'd need to plug into speakers. :)

But why the need for all the seperate devices?

Each device does a better than others, a high quality DVD player Oppo 983 is superior to console DVD playback, and quieter. HTPC better video playback than consoles, due to power and flexability. Also for browsing. Could also have a gaming PC connected also. Sky Freesat for TV. Also Squeezebox for music playback- no need for TV to be on. Then a line input for MP3 player. CD Player as I use that rather the CD player (high end DAC's)

So in a completely fairly setup blind trial you could pick out the picture of a standalone DVD player over a console?

And likewise with sound - same CD played through a console/stand alone player - positive you could tell the difference?

Or are you just trying to justify your excessive spending?

Also what if he doesn't want TV in the gaming room?

Yup.

And likewise with sound - same CD played through a console/stand alone player - positive you could tell the difference?

yup you have to be deaf to not the difference (analogue outputs)

Or are you just trying to justify your excessive spending?

I don't have to but why limit yourself to one source? One input is just daft, any decent audio/visual room has more than one input :-/ And not forgetting tape, VCR, Minidisc, vinyl, freeview, audio streamer. I have the following (two systems) You also have complex switching system, unless you want to flip inputs all the time. So you need a remote control with macros as well.

Two Squeezebox V3's
CD Player
DVD Player
HTPC
MP3 player
Freesat from Sky
Eventually will buy a Blu-Ray player.

Also what if he doesn't want TV in the gaming room?

If you're routing video, audio and LAN cable around the house you might as well put the aerial feed into that room as well, since the TV has a tuner might as well connect it up.

I don't care, I use a switch to use my PS3 and 360

A bit of a pain? What if you want another source? You'll need to remove that switch and buy another with three inputs. Is the switch remote controlled or manual?

It's probably best if the OP goes to proper audio/visual forums, these forums just have kids with 20" LCD's and £50 PC speakers.

And you don't have to spend that either :-/ To get a decent audio/video system that's upgradable and will allow you to add sources without having to resort to unplugging things everytime you use the other, buy switch boxes, optical splitters etc.

He's into gaming, so I'd probably have a driving setup again not exactly expensive? £150 for G25, plus £100 for wheelstand pro. £1K for a large screen LCD. Then about £800-£1K for 5.1 audio system. Again not exactly expensive. Considerring peopl here buy without any hesitation buy 280 GTX SLI and 1000W PSU's, £250 motherboards :-/

Badbob is correct, look at the amount of stuff he is buying, I am sure he can afford a real amp and with that amount of stuff it seems like it is required.

He obviously isn't bothered about sound due to considering using TV speakers or getting some headphones so why the ridiculous threads about spending thousands on audio equipment!

Christ, its just sound, the next person wouldn't be able to tell the difference so who cares.

And I'm telling you, you will. When you go to the cinema, ask them to mute the sound, and just play it throught a radio shack mono 2" speaker. A mate who wasen't into audio at all for movies heard my system, and spent several thousand that very month after I put on a few CD's and movie sequences. Only a person who hasen't heard a audio system would say your tripe. Hey it's only graphics, why not buy spectrum ZX81? Why pay £500 for a Xbox 360 and PS3, when you can buy a ZX81 for about £3?

The OP has said it's a gaming den, why only gaming? If he wants to watch a movie or normal he could do, why spend a thousand pounds plus and not use it? Also if he wants to watch Top Gear, and his kids or GF are playing games he can do, as two seperate video systems.

If I was the OP it would be hard to choose displays, I myself have owned both LCD and plasma and would not like to use a plasma if I was a big gamer.

Amp = £300ish, speakers what ever you like, it is also about the upgradability.

He asked for advice. This is it.

Its silly advice though, fair enough if he's specifically asked for expensive items, but it's a gaming room. It's like me asking someone to recommend me a new car, I'm looking at Clio's, they're telling me to buy Ferrari's.

Why shouldn't a gaming room have a decent video & audio system, if you can afford it? I'd rather play games with my B&W 601/CC6/Arcam/Yamaha 5.1 speaker system, than my crap Creative 4.1 speakers. And at least when I listen to my music in flac, it sounds great. Unlike with the Creative I just switch them off.

they're telling me to buy Ferrari's.

No, it's like buying a VW. Something which'll last, with decent build with some oomph. A PC 5.1 speaker set like the Creatives is like buying a Lada. The Ferrari of the audio world is Krell, Chord, Bryston with four or five figures for a single component. Compared to that, Q Acoustics 1010 are cheap as chips (but still thrown out here us "stupidly expensive" :-/ but still miles better than Creative pap.

No such thing as "way ott" it'll be fantastic, if you can afford it. For a cheaper system then probably £1000 for sound system, and have to choose a single display- will be a problem choosing plasma for TV & movies, if you also do lots of gaming. Bit risky with screenburn. Choosing a LCD only will be fine for games but not as good picture quality for TV & movies.

lol, for someone who is talking a load of equipment I'd have thought you'd understand that Screenburn is very much unlikely to happen now.

It probably is, but I'd rather not risk it. :-) I've got a Pioneer 50" Kuro. If I was to get into console gaming, I'd probably just buy a LCD as well. Dirt cheap now, and better than possibly damaging the Pioneer.

fair enough if he's specifically asked for expensive items,

And just how much exactly will a PS3, Xbox 360, console accesories and the games cost? I bet most console owners have several thousand pounds in games alone.
