Kitting out a gaming den ~ need suggestions

Since when is £5,000 not a lot of money?
That's more than 1/3rd of the national average wage.

Stop being silly badbob.

Worth it, if you're into audio. Granted it's probably too much for most people. So I'd probably say Q Acoustics 1010 with a suitable av amp, and all cables required, one retailer has it for £700 is a good system to start off. Which is a bargain. If you think that's expensive, you're cheap skate.

Pretty much when I see my CI he's got boxes of stuff miles better and expensive than mine, and his customers didn't even demo it, they just want a HT and not even concerned about what they're getting or the cost.

Things cost money, if you want quality you have to pay for it. Don't you own a BMW? Why didn't you buy a Austin Allegro instead? It's got 4 wheels and engine, that's all you need.

If Nokkon owns a BMW then he's bloody driving me to the LAN I tells yah :|

Most people earn WAY less than that a week, the majority of the population less than half. That is NOT cheap. He didn't say he wanted to make a home theater set up, or is that not sinking in?

Yeah because he bought all them games at once, RIGHT.

I didn't buy all my audio/visual gear at once, either. Either way his software collection is higher in value than most people's audio/video system combined. If you're going to have collections of music, video & games why not have something which you enjoy it more?

Mate had Titanic playing on his mono 20" CRT yeah it's a pants film but because of the screen size and pants sound you don't get the effect of the movie.

In LOTR into when the neighbours knock on the door I thought someone was banging on the door, not only because it came from behind you but I also got the physical effect through the air (pressure of the bangs)

Why do people buy large screen PC monitors, why not just game on a 15" LCD? Why buy £200+ GPU's when a £30 card will do just have lowest resolution and detail possible.

You don't buy a audio system every week either  That £700 home theatre will give you 10+ years of enjoyment so really is £700 that much? Nope. So that's about £1.30 /week over the 10 years. wow, that's a lot of money. A 10 year WOW subscription is £900, and what do you have at the end of it? Savegames :-/

Hey just ask scary squirrel.:rolleyes::D

£700 for a av amp, 5 speakers and a sub IS CHEAP, you're getting a hell of a lot for the money. One of my IEC cables costs ten times that much ;)

You do this all the time mate, trying to convince people to become an enthusiast in your hobby, give it a rest please, not everyone is as fanatical about audio as you are, or even care tbh, it's all very well saying 'well you should spend a bit more on this, this, and this, and it will sound better' but you can apply that theory to just about everything materialistic in life, why by 'that' car when you can get a better one for extra, why by 'that' particular wine when a few quid extra will net you a better taste experience etc etc,

Yes, people on here spend 'xxx' amount on CPU's, GPU's, gaming peripherals because that is their chosen passion/hobby that they choose to invest the most money into, you can't have the best of everything so you choose to invest your money into what interests you the most and what you care about the most, for you this is audio, for others, gaming, cars, fine art, antiques etc, we all have a different passions for different things, and choose to prioritise them at out own discretion based on what we feel is most important to us at the time, and how much disposable income we may have at that time also.

i think the Z5500 are more then enough for a small gaming room, they still make my house shake when fully blasted. Sure i would love to spend 1K+ on a better audio setup, but its not pheasable.

So to the OP Z5500 would be great for what you want :)

I use my speakers on my panasonic pz85 for gaming, they give a superb sound, i ditched my surround sound system not long after getting it.

The only time im ever impressed with surround sound is in the days after fitting a new system, the novelty wears off after a few films and i personally dont get any extra enjoyment gaming or movie watching in surround than i do with front speakers only.

Onto plasma screen burn, my daughter left our tv on ive pause on sky by accident after coming home for lunch, i came in 3 hours after to see it, the retention lasted about 30 seconds before clearing completely. Screen burn on plasmas really arent an issue if you buy one of the screens that has a good quality panel.

blah blah blah spend lots of money it'll sound good blah blah

The OP has a small amount of funds, not unlimited. It's also pretty clear he's not particularly bothered about spending lots on a sound system.

Perhaps if we knew what the actual budget was we'd know whether or not you were over specing? Either way it's clear you've derailed the thread enough.

You're just being very silly now. £700 is a lot of money to most people, especially if you're not an audiophile. Plus peoples tastes will vary, and what you find acceptable for £700 I could spend £200 and be just as pleased.

I think I've narrowed it down to 3 sets though they each do different things:

32" LCD ~ The Panasonic TX-32LZD85 ~ 100Hz, 1080P ~ £650 ~ would look nice in the space and probably the best 32" I could get. 37" is outside the budget (even this is slightly ott if I'm honest) though maybe I should be looking at other less specced LCD's @ 37". Is 1080p overkill on a 32" set?

Any particular reason for this choice over the Sony KDL32W4000 ?

Just curious as I'm looking at a similar size screen.

I would say 1080p is overkill for a 32" but it's a longevity thing. How long are you planning on keeping the TV before upgrading again? If it's going to be a while then you might as well bite the bullet and get a 1080p set now.

edit:

Just having a gander around and a Samsung Series 5 37" Full HD Ready 1080p can be had for around £600. I don't think they're 100 hz but that's really not important.

Stop trying to justify your expensive hobby (and by proxy 'bragging' your worth) to a bunch of people that clearly don't care

+1

You obviously have a lot more money than me if you think £700 is not a lot of money.

And one of my hobbies is biking, i have spent a lot of money on custom building a bike, do you see me in "Spec me a £50 bike" thread telling them to spend thousands and thousands of pounds? No.
