Hi there hello,

I've decided that it's now time to go 64bit (on 32bit ultimate atm) mainly because I want to use all 4GB of my RAM and not just 3325B of it and also to add another 4GB soon for photo editing apps being left open whilst doing other things like gaming and not having to worry about RAM usage.

I found the OCUK combo of Seagate 320GB 16MB HDD and Vista Home Premium @ £103 to be a good price (only £1 more than other places but with next day free del instead of 4-5 days! thanks ocuk!)

I needed a bit of confirmation on one thing. I need to know if on this version of Vista anyone has used *** remote desktop "patch" to enable inbound remote desktop connections ?

Apart from this there are no other differences between Ultimate and HP that I'm aware of so all looks set to be good!

Cheers :)

I think the offer has been a success so maybe someone can confirm if it's going to stay? :) I want to be able to get some more RAM from ocuk soon too :)

I don't know of any problems of incoming remote desktop problems, unless you mean about trying to control a Vista machine from an XP one.

I haven't tried it, on 64bit Ultimate, but I can do. Also what is this patch you speak of?

Edit: If you do mean any version of HP accepting incoming remote desktop then I don't think there is a problem as my Laptop (HP 32Bit) works fine from my main PC (Ultimate 64bit)

Vista 64 has no problems with inbound remote desktop connections, I'm using Vista 64 enterprise and am connected from an xp desktop at work to my home machine as we speak.

Obviously you will need to allow it in the firewall and do some port forwarding on the router :D

Strange, just tried connecting to my Laptop and it won't allow me to, I swear that I've had it working before. I'll try the patch that I've now found, that you speak of, and will report back

don't get a seagate, get a samsung / wd

don't know if there's remote desktop patch for SP1 (haven't looked)

it doesn't have an rd server by default though

in vista have you got the box selected "Allow connections from computers running any version of remote desktop"?

To make things clear, I am not having problems with RDP on my current machine(s) - they are all 32bit Ultimate and Home premium. The HP box is patched fine and dandy. I am looking to upgrade to 64bit Vista HP on my main machine which is on 32bit Ultimate ATM and my question was regarding connecting to that machine.

Enterprise, Business and Ultimate have RDP terminal services enabled and included by default so clients can connect to those OSes. On Home Premium you can only connect from them to other OSes like Ultimate and Business but you cannot connect /to/ them because MS omitted the RDP service from Home Premium.

I've managed to track down the Vista SP1 64bit files and guide now, it works on 32bit Home premium (using the 32bit patched files) but wanted to know if anyone has used it on 64bit! Guess I will just have to try it :p

1. Dowload the following http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/permalink/210408/244477/ShowThread.aspx#244477 (or http://www.coffincruisers.com/RDP_Vista_SP1.zip)

2. Stop and disable the Terminal Server service, under services.msc

3. From the file downloaded in step 1, extract all contents to a temporary location. Copy termsvr.dll to the clipboard (ctrl-c).

4. In explorer, browse to c:\windows\system32.

5. Rename termsvr.dll to termsvr_old.dll. This is your backup.

6. Paste the file copied in step 3. You now have c:\windows\system32\termsvr.dll again.

7. Run the corresponding .bat file from the files extracted in step 3.

8. Should error out - don't worry.

9. Open services.msc again and set Terminal Server (or Terminal Services) service to automatic.

10. Restart the PC and check the event viewer for logs. Test your new config by going to a new computer and using MSTSC.

i'm using HP x64 SP1 with the RDP "patch" to allow incoming connections. However, if you don't need Media Centre why not get Business instead?

I do need Media centre this is why I got 32bit ultimate when it came out as no patch existed back then for 64bit RDP :p

So you're saying the patch you used works? is it the same as the above I posted ?

I'm not that stupid, but it is different in HP SP1. I just get "Allow remote assistance.." then under "Advanced" - "Allow this computer to be controlled remotely". Still doesn't work. Will try Mrk's Walkthrough now.

Let me know mate, only a few hours before ocuk free ship ends!

Restarting now ;)

Edit: Works fine mate, there is a slight hick up that you need to put in the log in credentials before you are allowed to connect, but once you connect you have to re-enter them as it leaves you on the logon screen, or at least, it did for me. Hope this helps :D

you know you can use your current 32bit licence with 64bit yeah? (no need to buy a new one, just format)
