Soul Calibur 4 Online Ass Whoopin, Arrangin Thread

I've given up on it altogether. The mechanics of the game are just no good for competitive play imo. Button mashing and spamming moves is too effective in this game. Spectacular moves are just too easy to execute through button mashing, and the key combinations themselves are too simple and easy to do for what the move does, especially on chars like Kilik, Maxi...etc.The characters are too imbalanced, and the game completely favours fast characters. The whole different speed and different range for each character just doesn't work and it's not even remotely balanced.

I've enjoyed ranked a lot of the time, you get some pushovers, some people who spam to win and a surprising amount of good fun matches (Talim [me] Vs Maxi) spring to mind,a ctually some great graphical martial arts fights :)

Currently level 38 I think, not sure how much further i'll go, give it a few hours every other night or so, will try and push lvl 50 then "retire" :)

sc has always been a pretty balanced game and has a very active scene of competitive players. button mashers only get so far, they really have absolutely no chance. spectacular moves doesnt mean that they are good, half of everyones movelists are complete rubbish. every character (except maybe like 2) has some form of speed if you know what to use and many characters are played very differenty. rushing in will not work for everyone, if you have range you tend to have a set of moves designed to keep people out and moves which push people in certain directions etc.

heres a vid of some good players and it shows you how a slower char (astaroth) deals with quicker characters (cass) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu5PhM1sjYE
i know you (kittenscake) have an interest in the competitive MK scene, maybe you should head over to caliburforum.com and you will see what SC has to offer and that it goes way wayyyyy beyond button mashing

lucifurr i know what you mean with the characters but it just the way things are... there will always be the popular "ken and ryu" characters. with regards to the average online cervantes, you want to side step a lot. you can easily side step his charging across the screen, and when he disappears in the air. failing that you can just block or GI.

and timbrad im glad you're still enjoying it, its a shame you didnt get it for the ps3 :p

i have actually found the online mode really enjoyable and a good percentage of my games are absolutely fine lagwise. ive also met a handful of decent players too... im currently level ~68 and ill stop when i have enough good players on my friends list to do player matches with :D

Unfortunately I don't have a console, but I often play this on my mates ps3, just wanted to say that this is an awesome game. Also really fun to annoy people in it.

I love making nice women in uwear in it and fighting with them shame you don't have such things on pc :(.

But annoying people online, how fun :D, eg. make some very ugly deformed woman, call her ''Your Mother'' and make sure it's a good buttom bashing char.
Then go online and **** people by button bashing with ''your mother'', the reactions on PSN you get with the message systems are hilarious, people getting winded up :D.

hehe always good, i like to bring out ronald mcdonald or my big gay astaroth complete with pink accessories, green fro and police hat :D

I'm having real problems defeating The Apprentice in Arcade. He's just....broken!

I can get right the way through to Stage 7 without defeat, and then *bang*, that's it no more progress.
The wife managed to beat him once (as in one round) last night, but we're just snookered. Any tips anyone? (ste, I'm looking at you ;))

Well my biggest problem is just fast character button mashers, and unfortunately they seem to make up 99% of the people that play online. So difficult to do anything as a slower character coupled with the lag. I've actually only had 1 game where my opponent was playing properly and not button mashing :(

I've only just started playing and I'm pretty rubbish but this is exactly what I experienced last night. I was playing as Siegfried against Talim and I could barely get a hit on her. My attacks were so slow to wind up and before I could do anything she was all over me with combos. I hated Talim in SC2 and I still hate her :D

On the plus side I played against someone who really knew what they were doing with Astaroth and I actually enjoyed watching helplessly as my arse was handed to me on a plate. Mitsurugi was always my character of choice but I might have to start learning the big man.

the easiest way i can think of is to use his A+G throw which rings out behind vader, so get yourself right to the edge, wait for them to come and block if you need to then just throw them when they get close enough :D

oh right, i thought you were trying to unlock apprentice in arcade mode with vader :D

hmm theres a lot to say about sc but i guess the best way to describe it is that it is like several giant rock, paper, scissors games going on at once.

so i figured you already know the hit properties as you played tekken, but in short:
high attacks - must be blocked high. can be ducked
mid attacks - must be blocked high. hits people crouching
low attacks - must be blocked low. can be jumped

then you got your A, B and K...
horizontal attacks (A) - hits people who side step
vertical attacks (B) - hits people who are charging in on you
kicks (K) - a bit random, genereally short range and fast

you need to find a character that you're comfortable with and suits the way you play and think, do you like range? speed? power? evasion? throws? etc.

learn what moves your character has, you need to find a good selection of moves for different situations and know what to use them eg:

- a few combo strings, maybe some that have a hit somewhere you can vary like a high/low hit. these are just some stuff you can attack with
- general really quick hits that you can throw out at random to stop people dead in their tracks, this is called a poke
- moves that stun people... once people are stunned its your opportunity to start a combo. you will need to learn or make up combos of course :D
- a very fast attack of some sort to use when you are getting barraged with attacks, generally used after their move/string ends or after you block to stop their rhythm or just so you can start attacking yourself.
- a fast attack to use after you block a slow attack with long recovery. this is called punishment
- a good strong hit to use when the opponent misses and is wide open. this is called whiff punishment. (whiff means to miss)
- learn which moves ring out. check throws too

this could go on for a while but thats a generic list with the basic situaltions covered. knowing the moves is just scraping the surface, its about knowing what a move is good for and being able to do it when the time arises :D

also if you are getting hit its best that you block. very few characters are fast enough to attack back whilst they're getting hit but nearly everyone in the game is capable of retaliating after a blocked attack (the slowest of characters will benefit a lot from guard impacts)

other than that just play the game (against humans, AI is a different game!), you'll see what works and what doesn't. also remember that nothing is cheap... if its in the game its there to be used. throws are not cheap, ring outs are not cheap, repeated moves are not cheap. there is a counter for everything.

i reckon thats the basics covered, i think ive written too much already >.<

what is up with sunday?!

ive been in game for about 40 mins, so far ive had 4 wins, 3 disconnects (all which i won), 1 loss to a laggy mitsu which made me want to cry and i must have tried joining at least 70 games, half of which are 'full' and half of which people disconnect before it starts.

so much effort and so little actual play time -_-

edit- lmao add another 5 failed join attepts and another disconnect (on final round) to that list T_T

i only play people within 30 levels of me (i used the -+30 filter) so imagine id be doing a lot of quitting myself if a load of random low levels join my games :(

i like being able to pick out players of a similar level to me to play against but it turns out the more people care more about caressing their (fake) win ratio than to get a decent game :p
