It's still early, but this could be very bad for New Orleans. Current tracking predictions show it making landfall just west of New Orleans, which would be the worst position possible as the storm surge is stronger on the east side of the storm due to the direction of the rotation. It is now expected to be a Cat 4 as it strikes. This storm could scrub N.O. off the map if it keeps going as predicted.

The combination of more frequent and stronger hurricanes (due to the rise in sea temp in the Gulf of Mexico) and the fact that natures defenses against the storms (the wetlands) have been compromised by human developments surely means it's not viable to have a large city there anymore. If Gustav hits hard surely they'll have to abandon N.O. for good this time?

If they have any sense they will abandon it, waste of money if a hurricane keeps stomping on the place every year.

I'm guessing they wont adandon though as a lot of people wont have sense.

Same as all those people who build their wooden houses, and those who live in trailer parks too, in a place called "Tornado Alley" and then complain when they get smashed to pieces.

About time the Earth starts taking back some of whats hers.

As long as its not my house.. :(

How long till it is projected to hit mainland US?

further proof of gods non existence, unless of course every resident of new orleans is a devil worshipper.
he destroys their city, and just as their rebuilding destroys it again but worse. lovely guy.

i would hate to have to pack up my life and put it in a car, feel sorry for the people of new orleans.

Actually I'd say that the speech by the Mayor was more of a "This time we'll cover our own arses in case the worst happens" speech, coupled with a slight tinge of GTFO.
