It's still early, but this could be very bad for New Orleans. Current tracking predictions show it making landfall just west of New Orleans, which would be the worst position possible as the storm surge is stronger on the east side of the storm due to the direction of the rotation. It is now expected to be a Cat 4 as it strikes. This storm could scrub N.O. off the map if it keeps going as predicted.
The combination of more frequent and stronger hurricanes (due to the rise in sea temp in the Gulf of Mexico) and the fact that natures defenses against the storms (the wetlands) have been compromised by human developments surely means it's not viable to have a large city there anymore. If Gustav hits hard surely they'll have to abandon N.O. for good this time?
