"Halfrauds" and "stealers"

Just curious why quite a few people use the terms "halfrauds" and "stealers", it confuses me a little as if people hate/dislike them well they don't buy from them, its not like they're forced to?!

Or is a "kewl" thing like the whole M$ for Microsoft?

Mostly the latter imo. While there is some element of truth in it, it's way over-exaggerated.

I use Halfords a fair amount. their tools are top notch and there's always one local and open 'till 8pm, which can be mega handy if you're halfway through a job and realise you're missing a vital tool! I use trade though, so it brings the prices down :)

as for dealerships, recently I've found Renault to be fairly competitive, except for the odd part which seems be to overvalued by 600% :D - I took my car there to be MOT'd and it was £26. New wipers were £9 fitted. Piston rings were £30, CTS £17 etc etc...

I agree with you it is handy. Nowhere else in Manc bothers to stay open til 8-9pm. I agree the tools are generally of decent quality as well. I wish I had a trade card..At the end of the day tho I'm not trade I'm just some muppet mending his cars on the drive. My main experience of main dealers is mazda and I've rarely found their prices competative. I don't mind paying 10-15% more for genuine mazda parts but generally the markup is much more than that.

So £5 for a bottle of "cockpit spray" or similar that could be bought in Asda for £2 is not a huge markup?

Many people complain about pricing... not just for Halfords, but other shops too, saying they can get it cheaper elsewhere. The short answer is... buy it elsewhere then!

Trust me I do! It annoys me if I want to buy a tool or something from them and I also happen to need a sundry (sundrie?) item that I can't just buy the two from the same shop unless I want to get swindled. Especially since they have traditionally claimed to offer great value.

no-ne can be cheapest on everything and still remain a bricks and mortar shop open with such long hours, catering to such a varied market its just not feasible.

i rarely buy from there but you you can order something a fiver cheaper off the net, pay a couple of quid shipping, but it no use if you need said part/tool there and then is it?

Imagine how many cockpit sprays Asda can buy for all their stores and how many halfords can buy.

Bulk buying.

Imagine how many Halfords sell. I am familiar with bulk buying concepts but this is beyond a joke. Imagine how many products in this category Halfords sell- it must be massive.

loss leaders? if people know they can get something like that from asda cheaply then they are more likely to get more car type things from there and regardless of price will assume they're cheaper

I think the term Halfrauds is a bit unfair. It's easy to find a better deal on parts/bits in some cases if you really want to, and if you're silly enough to pay for them to fit stuff, then more fool you tbh.

Convenience is a big factor sometimes and I don't begrudge the extra quid or so on some items.

i used to by oil from halfrauds (castrol gtx) as i couldn't find it in other petrol stations, we have rubbish ones around here.

anyway, whilst in tesco i saw the same oil for about £7 less which is considerable when the oil is about £18 in halfrauds.

I wouldnt have thought there is an awful lot of difference - imagine how many cockpit sprays the average Halfords store sells compared to the average Asda store - I bet the difference is enough to even out the additional number of Asda stores.

Agreed on that, I was looking for the 900s Amplifier from FLI, Just my luck, Halfords had a sale on, Meaning thier prices were what you would find from a small car accessories shop, But slightler cheaper this time round, Got the amp for £79.99 when others were selling it for £100, £90. Lol had to remind the kid to put on the discount after he denied this isn't audio equipment and try to charge me £100 for it.

That's pretty bad.

Its unrealistic to expect every member of staff to know every little thing about ever product on sale. The staff in our local Halfords store are pretty good imo. You find the advice you are after. Even if the first person you ask isn't sure they will find someone who knows a definite answer.

I've always assumed it's the "kewl" thing etc.

We had it with M$, Micro$oft, etc
Now we get it with "Halfrauds".

I don't know - when I see or hear people using such things I just can't help thinking back to when your 5 or 6 and first start "rhyming" words together and think it's incredibly funny - which I guess it is to a 5 or 6 year old.

I bought some wiper blades the other day and they wanted £1.99 for fitting them.... its a pair of wiper blades ffs lol. Halfrauds is a good name for them ;)

But did they hold a gun to your head and demand you pay the £1.99 to have them fitted?
You could (and did I assume) just walk away, no?
