spec me a Martial Art!

I am interested in learning Martial Arts, the main driver is to help build my personality and help me to be more disciplined, so something that teaches you to get into a good 'frame of mind'? I am not so bothered about the combat/fitness side of it as I just see that as bonus gains.

All advice appreciated :D

If you aren't that bothered about the combat/fitness I'd do yoga instead. You'll develop much faster mentaly in yoga than you will in martial arts.

I would reccommend Karate. I did freestyle full contact for about 3/4 years and it was good fun and learned a lot. I also took part in aikido and taekwondo but not for as long. The latter two I felt were more disiplined than karate.

Wing Chun Kung Fu -
This is the best martial art you will ever learn.

But the most hardest thing about learning a martial art is your master, you must have the best one and then you can learn.

In Wing Chun I have learnt more and more about my body, my energy, etc.
My fitness level over the Summer has been maintained and usually in the Summer I just eat loads and loads and get fat and do no sport....

I learn a special variation of wing chun, my master has developed a soft way to approach people when you are in a fight - using your open hands, otherwise wing chun is basically using weapons and killing the opponent - but not with my master...

It is like a langauge and mathematics, you speak when you are fighting.
This is really the best martial art, if you want karate, taekwon do etc. akido - all the people I know have moved from them to wing chun kung fu.

Have a look on YouTube.
If you are a Bruce Lee fan do it!

I'm doing Wing Chun at the moment and it's awesome. Who's your Sifu? Mine is Master Paul Hawkes.

Mine is Master Ridha, www.wingchun.fr
He teaches me in France, he does a different style though because he thinks taking peoples eyes out is too aggressive and they are old - it's the 21st Century and he teaches me a method which I kick someone in the genital area :P And I strike with my open hands, with my palm. Try hitting yourself with the palm of your hand on your jaw and tell me what you feel... All boxers do it and it's an effective way to knock someone out without any blood.

That sounds very similar to the methods I'm taught. I usually always go for a palm to the jaw or a chop to the throat. As for the knackers; that too. Nothing quite like a swift kick to the family jewels of your attacker when you're defending yourself.

That's what suprised me about Wing Chun, I went into it thinking it'd be very 'clean' but I was pleased to see the street fighting aspect of it as it works extremely well as I've had a friend (a former Sifu who introduced me to it) attacked by two lads on his way home and put both of them in their places so to say.

I almost feel sorry for anyone who tries to mug a Grand Master like Keith Kernspecht or Sergio Iadarola.
