is the industry due any more drops around the festive season? i knows its kind of a crystal ball question but i am going for a new budget build around dec/jan with £200-300 to spend

At the moment, something like a E7200, 2gb DDR2 800 and a DS3 or P5K-C seem tempting. I have come close to forking out now for that.

think i would be a wise man to wait til xmas?

AKA - anyone potentially upgrading near then ;)

My current bet is on prices going up rather than down. The pound is weakening pretty steadily, so the next batch of imports will be more expensive... though if the dollar tanks again (as it really should) that situation may change.

Of course if it's a weak Xmas (again, as it ought to be given the uncertain economic situation) the January or pre-Xmas sales could counteract, or even beat that effect as retailers try to hit their targets.

The bottom line for me is that current prices seem very good across the board... especially on RAM. Things may get better or worse in the future, but you'll never get the next three months back! When I moved from a x2 3800 to an E6600 last year I was very impressed by the speed the improved architecture had to offer, even before I started overclocking. I think you'll be even more impressed now, whether you upgrade tomorrow or in several months' time.

PS It's never the right time to spend money. :-) That's why I try to stick to the rule which says "Am I disappointed with the speed at which something I really need/enjoy is running?" If I answer yes, then I immediately budget an upgrade and buy as soon as I've saved the money.

Prices can go up or hold steady near or at Xmas, simply because demand increases. Best time to buy around that period is new year's.

I advised my brother a few years ago to hold off until new year for his new PC, but understandably enough, he wanted it under the tree for the kids. He paid a premium for doing so to the tune of around £100 at the time.
