Cheaper Car?

Woah, sounds excellent. Bet you are really excited :) You are right about the removal of risk of the arrangement fee, im feeling very nervous about it myself.

£1k or what ever it is seems a lot of money to loose if someone in the chain backs out for what ever reason, then you'll end up having to pay it again!

Yeah i am really very happy, i'm fortuante enough to have had a lot of help from mum mum and grandparent on mum's side, which without i wouldn't have been able to step on the ladder. I'm only 22, but the earlier i start the easier its going to be later in life :)

Indeed, mine is a repo so no chain like yourself, first time buyer too (been renting a house for around 3 years since i was 20) so touch wood it should go through ok.

Help or not 22 is a brilliant age to be buying, i thought i was young at (just turned) 23. Although i haven't had direct financial help I was just really lucky that my dad's backing has enabled me to throw large quantities of capital at starting my car business, which eventually allowed me to save a 6 figure deposit, without that help i would never have managed. I truly don't know how a lot of people ever manage buy, especially in Oxfordshire. No way i could have managed it on a normal salaried job.

Hope it all goes well, for the moment i'd keep the car with the mindset that its a liquid asset which you can later use to inject some more money into the house should you need to, once your finances have settled down after the purchase.

A cheaper car than an 8 year old Peugeot hatchback? Whatever you replace it with will be false economy, I doubt it will save you any money. It's not as if you've got a 15k Boxster sitting on the drive taking up valuable capital, is it?

A valid point, and one that makes not selling it more of a reality :)

I suppose if i ever needed to sell it, i just wouldn't buy another car for a while and see how i got on :)

Like i said earlier, i think i'll probably keep it for a while and see how i get on with it once i'm moved in :)

The best thing to do with your car now you've got a house is reside yourself to keeping it as long as possible - so make sure you keep it in decent nick and shelve any plans to upgrade for a while :)

Which has very quickly become a reality, instead of looking at Demon Tweeks catalogues, i'm finding myself browsing through Ikea Catalogue, and making comments to the GF like... "oh, isn't that a nice dining table" :(

Totally normal mate, ive gone through the same transition as have friends of mine who have bought. Cars are nice as toys but its only normal to be interested in proper stuff like you have just mentioned too. I must say though that my interest is more in building materials and the like, rather than items like tables (i'm leaving all of that rubbish to claire):p I've always maintained that i would never allow a car to cost a significant enough amount of money that it infringes on more important things, although i guess that is more coming from the fact that while running a house i have little choice in the matter.

Yeah, I wouldn't have though you'd be able to save a worthwhile amount by changing car. It mightn't be the cheapest car to run, but you wouldn't make much back by selling it and buying something else. Just be careful with your money, that'll be better for your wallet in the mean time.

If your car was worth quite a lot more, it'd be more understandable, but as you say, its only worth about £3k or so - so whats the point?

Its reliable, it does the job, and its most definately a case of "better the devil you know"

Keep it :)

Which is where a nice cheap estate car comes in very useful! Bloody annoying trying to fit long planks of wood etc. for DIY into a small hatchback, and if you have to buy any larger furniture you are stuffed unless you carry it Mr Bean style :D

If I could have scraped another 1.5k together when I bought my house it would have made a big difference. Then again I was so skint I was using garden furniture for several months...

Was just thinking the same thing, i am scraping every last £100 together at the moment to try and keep my borrowing to a minimum. £3000 would make a big difference.

I'm also lucky to have 99.9% of the furniture we need, party things im taking with me from home,. and most of it from where my GF used to have a house, and stored the furniture :) All i really need to buy is a Tumble Drier, Fridge/Freezer and a Shed :)
