They are awesome, I suggest you do try them. If you ever do though, make sure you play DK1 first. Otherwise the far superior graphics of DK2 will just ruin DK1 for you.

Aye, I loved the idea of EG, but the implementation was really, really poor in places. Micro management can be good, but when you're spending days having to micromanage almost every minion because the AI is dumb, or it takes days (real time) to manage to do certain things even after you've got all the parts to do it and no way of speeding it up without everything going pear shaped (some of the research was I think bugged, as you could practically place all the items in the lab, and still not have the option for a particular thing to be researched for days, days that you couldn't speed up for fear of having the base blown up).
I used to love Dungeon Keeper, it had the right mix of humour and tactical thinking to make it really fun
However, the game I would really like to see a modern, true version of has to be Wing Commander Privateer (still got it on my shelves
), as that was a superb game, especially given the technical limitations at the time (IIRC it came on floppy or CD).
HereticII as third person game. Yes, the textures and modelling looks dated now, but man:
* first - HereticII was the last third person game to feature proper camera view point instead of puke inducing lucas arts/console TP mode you find in all games today - as in - in Heretic II you have third person view point at the game, rather than playing as freak attachment to your characters neck
* second - dude, what you could do with staff (the basic weapon) in that game. Omg! It seriously makes most of the games today look like a rehash of minesweeper

Isn't Daggerfall freeware now? or am i thinking of another game in the series?
No. Arena was released as a free download, but that (AFAIK) was a temporary measure to celebrate its tenth anniversary. It may be what you are thinking of.

No it won't - gameplay trumps eye-candy (within reason), and DK has far better gameplay than DK2. The problem with the SP maps at least in DK2 is that there's really only one way to play most of them, whereas DK allowed all sorts of tricks.
Another classic example: UT. Every version has been a bit prettier than the previous version, but a bit less interesting to play. The humour and fun of UT has slowly been abandoned as the game has morphed into the far more po-faced Q3A (for those who remember the original rivalry).

You seem to be missing the point that it can be harder to 'get into' prequels to sequels if you play the sequel first. If you've already played the first game then this isn't a problem (clearly what you have done).

A prequel isn't the first released film/game in a series, a prequel is a subsequent film which is set before the events of the films in its series that preceed it.
