ATI X2 HD 4870 with Hyper 580w PSU?

Hi folks,

I'm about to purchase an ATI X2 HD 4870 but I am a bit concerned. I have a Hyper Type R 580w PSU and will also be fitting a new INtel QC 6600 CPU. Will this be powerful enough to handle the graphics card? Thanks

I have the hyper 580 and it runs two dvd players, a p35 mobo with two sata hard-drives including a q6600 with an 8800gt. I am unsure about the support in terms of power requirements for a 4870 as I simply do not know

Edit: Maximum power draw is about 160 watts for the 4870 I have read.

At first glance it seems to be asking a lot, but you'll never know until you try.

I'd imagine it would be fine at stock, but if you're planning on overclocking them both you might have trouble with stability.

I would imagine it would burst into flames if you overclocked the quad.

With say a E8XXX you might get away with it, just if you kept it at stock.

Everything's overclocked and i've had no problems i can say this is proberly the best psu for the money

This guy seems to be ok except he is using a 3870xt.
When you say don't do it, are you also referring to the version 2 Type M which is Crossfire certified that Overclockers are selling?

I would imagine your talking about 200-250 watts of additional load over a 3870 which is nearly half the output of the PSU.

Well I would never run a PSU over 80% capacity. I personally have seen a PSU catch fire under heavy load. Not a nice site and pretty scary. When you run PSU's out of spec you can also trash all your gear. Not worth it IMHO.

To be on the safe side then would a 650 or 700 watt psu be sufficient/minumum to buy for a 4870?

A 4870 X2 will pull another 100 Watts + over a 3870 X2 and you are only running a Dual Core. He's talking about a Quad which overclocked can draw some serious power.

4870 or a 4870 X2?

I have a 4870X2 on order and I will be powering it with a Corsair HX620 which is a good supply with plenty of current on the 12v line. Which is all that counts at the end of the day.

It may say that on the box but it can't even deliver it's stated output of 580w!! It's a very poor psu and only has 360w on the 12v rails which is very weak for a supposedly 580w psu. I have read reviews that show these things blowing up or simply just shutting down before they get anywhere near 580w. Several have had them blow up on here and some have even lost components to exploding Hipers. I would not risk your rig with one of these psu's. Far better to get a quality one for a rig that powerful.

Yes you are correct about the 360 on the 12v rails it says that is on +12v1 + 12v2.

Difference between your card and a 4870 is about 70-80 watts. You might get away with it. I suspect your Quad is pulling some power at 3.3 though so you could always back it off if you get any issues.

Personally I would invest in a good quality supply like the Corsair. Cheap enough now.

I have a quad at 3.6ghz and a 4870 with 600 watts psu, so you should be fine.
