Forget recession! It might not even matter anymore!

Everyone knows they are developing a large ion cannon which they're going to fit onto the I.S.S so they can zap terrorists.

I'm getting so bored of people claiming that the LHC could end the world or swallow up the galaxy or turn us all into cows (etc etc). If you do the math, which I bet either none or only a few of these journalists have, you realise that it's about as likely to happen as walking into your room and finding Jessica Alba AND Megan Fox waiting for you.

Has no one here even played Half Life?!

That did make me laugh a bit though :)

Given the current climate, I think WWIII is odds-on favourite to block any recession, not black holes!

Experiments like this just make you realise how far behind the uk is in science, this is much more worthwhile than the frivolous things that the government wastes our money on like the olympics and costs less, plus it is actually usefull. Maybe if so much money wasn't wasted on benefits...

Yea, Because the money spent on the Olympics wont be made back from the massive boost to the economy we'll see during said Olympics, plus its going to be such a waste leveling everything thats being built especially for the Olympics - because we'll never use it again.. oh wait.. we will. Silly post.

Agreed governments waste money, disagree that Olympics is one of them.

but its a joint effort , i doubt the UK could perform experiments of such scale alone

The UK has quite a bit of involvement in the LHC project, not just with money but with a lot of input from our scientists. It doesn't make sense for any one country to build something like this since the scale is just so huge + all of the results are going to be shared anyway so it doesn't make sense for everyone to just build their own LHC.
