I think i read somwhere that graphics cards wont send the sound down an hdmi connection which would mean i wouldnt, be able to put a single hdmi lead from my pc into my av amp with both picture and sound.

Is this correct or is there a card that will do it?

Thanks guys.

ATI cards from the 3000 series upwards pass sound over the HDMI connection. Most come with the required DVI to HDMI adaptor in the box.

Strange, I know for a fact the 4800 series has no problem doing just that, and I thought the 3000 series was similar, but just limited to 5.1.

I've just installed a hd 4850.

Every time i restarted/booted my PC up i would get the 'found new hardware wizard'. It had found , High Def Microsoft bus (?????).
What a pain in the ass this was.

Unfortunately, i can't remember how or what driver i downloaded to fix this problem because i was on my 8Th can of Stella at the time.

Anyway, i hope this helps.

ATI cards do it, but I think it may even be limited to Stereo sound, not even 5.1.

But they definately do it, Ive had my Media PC connected to my HDTV through it.

I've not played around with it but theres a connector that came with my GTX280 that i thought was for connecting to the motherboard for HDMI sound.....

So I went for this card in my system.
Don't really know if it will do the job or not, but I needed to order a pc.

If not then I can always upgrade.

NVIDIA GEFORCE 9800 GT 1024MB

Bad choice that. You would have been better of getting a 8800GT as they are generally cheaper, even though they offer the same performance.

512MB of ram is ideal for that card, paying extra for 1GB is pretty much worthless.

7.1 surround is part of the specs of the HD 4XXX cards from ATi, that's from bluray too, I remember seeing it on an image of a gigabyte branded R770 specs card just before they were released.

With ATi's HD2/3/4XXX cards you can have souns and picture over the same cable, you can even have pixture and 7.1 surround sound with the HD 4XXX cards.
