i posted this earlier but i feel so infuriated i think it qualifies for its own thread

plus i love having a good rant

-----------------------------------

after installing and faffing around with two "games for windows" titles this week on a 3 week old install of vista 64 i can honestly say that drm is a joke

it should read "broken software for windows" along the title strip

the fact that neither of them work properly is atrocious- it says games for windows on the box and it doesnt work in bloody windows is a farse

i am a legit user who has never pirated a game and it is telling me i have emulation software running?
etc etc
its actually pretty insulting considering i dont have any of the processes or related programs such as iso mounting or dvdclone software
i have no interest in that

my pc is purely for games and editing my camcorder vids

steam works fine, no problems at all - a good model in my opinion
if it was more competativley priced and in a £ format then i would only get my games on there

its also laughable how call of duty 4, UT3 and assassins creed all install fine and need nothing more to get them working than a simple mouse click
in theory these should be the ones with problems problems with them not being games for windows!

put a games for windows in and it needs all that hassle straight away!

and dont even get me started on games for windows live

but the fact i have had to use illegal 'no cd' patches to get legit retail games that i purchased to work is a joke

its been said too many times

with drm - the only people who lose out are the honest pc gamers who buy their games legit

I've lost count of the amount of 'Games for Windows' I've bought for Vista 64. Never had a problem with them.

So presumably you don't have Alcohol120% or whatever it is called...

Or any other kind of software?

Out of interest, what software are you using for the camera software for editing.

I don't buy as many games as I used to - time more than anything.
However I too have bought many a "Games for Windows" and I've been running Vista64 since the beta stages and everything just....works.

I insert the media, it installs and then I play the game.
What kind of problems are people having?

i use the software that came with the camera as its actually quite good - also use pinnacle for some bits and pieces

no versions of alcohol or dt or anything like that

like i said - new install of vista with games and video editing

i have itunes/torrent clients and other stuff like that on my other machine that i dont use for playing games

the installs go fine its just that both the games use stupid third party drms that say they cannot find a dll three times then stop working then a software emulation detected message comes up

games in question are flatout and dmc4

funny how they are both console ports too!

didn't realize flatout was GFW - I got it on Steam.

The only G4W game I own is assassins creed, and I never had any trouble with that..

I have Universe at War, Sup Com, Grid, Crysis and Juiced 2 installed that are Games for Windows titles, all play ok. Even the couple of GfW Live titles I have both work fine (Juiced 2 and Universe at War). Vista 64 btw.

Have you tried googling for a fix?

I just did a quick google and the first result looks like a patch to fix the problem with flatout. Unfortunately I cant actually access that site from work so I’ve no idea, but the brief google description looks promising:

“This patch is for the European version of FlatOut only. This patch only applies to .... That will eliminate the emulation error problem with that program. ...
support.empireinteractive.com/default.aspx?MID=60568495217F&PID=8EFED345-2B60-46FA-AB40-9CB31CFFE6FE”

What games are not working out of interest ?

I have never had a problem with this i must admit.

I too have no qualms with GFW titles.

My problem with GFW is I find it a little pointless. Yes, I am aware of its "benefits" but they dont benefit me too much but it does no harm I guess.

my assassins creed isnt games for windows? hmmm

the games not working in reply to Adsta are...

flatout UC
supcom

also - i have fixed the problem and the two games play fine now [bonus that the cd drives are free]
but i just think that an illegal nocd patch to fix a legit game is a bit, well, you know

G4WL does not have any DRM at all. Some games need Windows Live 4 Games but that is to track achievements or access the online lobby's (Lost Planet: Colonies Edition & Gears Of War have these features which are also free on the PC now but on the X360 you would need to pay £40 a year for Gold membership).

I have found that GFW is a good thing as it forces standards onto publishers so they have to work on both 32 & 64 bit OSes as well as support all known 4:3 & widescreen resolutions (this is why EA do not usually have GFW except for Crysis) then if the game uses a gamepad it has to support the 360 controller. Finally MS have to test the title then the publisher can use the GFW branding for free no fees to pay. MS do this to increase PC game sales & awareness which is good for all.

Crysis, Age Of Conan, Civ4: Beyond The Sword, The Witcher, Supreme Commander, Lord Of The Rings Online. They're the Games For Windows games I've bought so far and all of them run without a hitch and do what they say on GFW's tin (guaranteed compatibility with wide screen etc. is a lifesaver, even in this day and age).

Even if you had Alcohol 120% installed and were using Virtual Drive software I can't understand why this should stop something from installing or running correctly.

Each release of Alcohol will change the drive emulation scheme anyway so they're never going to stop it.

Pathetic IMHO.

Exactly same problem with mine on vista 64, shocking.

Odd that some people have this problem and others dont

Been running on Vista 64 for good couple months now and i have never had a problem installing any game. Maybe im just lucky *shrugs*

well it is the copy of flatout that you sent me mark! ;)

its all good now the nocd patch is on

G4WL does not have any DRM at all
just ranting about the emulation software which IS in place on flatout
it installs fine but then says i have illegal or similar software on

i agree with you post that standardisation is a good idea and that it makes windows games more reliable - but my point is that drm in this game has ruined the initial buzz you get when you first get a game installed and press the exe

same thing happened in supcom but using a different software - its just pointless

like i say - its a fresh install of vista

on mostly new hardware

the only things installed are

vista
drivers
steam+games
xfire
itunes
cod4
crysis
supcom
flatout
lastfm
and that is pretty much it

i check the processes in taskman and there is nothing there different to my laptop wich i put vista basic on yesterday

so why would it pick up on software that isnt and has never been there

i do miss the days where pc games came in cardboard boxes bigger than a fridge and on 26 disks

Are you sure you have nothing like nero, clonecd, clonedvd, alcohol120%, daemontools, or any other iso mounting tools ?

Have you tried forcing itunes and last.fm down just incase ?
