hello there!

ive decided to look into investing a new rig for gaming and have a budget of about £600 but can stretch to £650

ive had a look around and so far ive come up with this:

now im a complete noob when it comes to building a pc/getting the right stuff so thats why i came here, if anyone could tell me if all this would be compatible and if there are any upgrades/side grades that could help me to save money.

I want this rig to be able to play the more demanding games on the market and also be future proof.

thanks in advance

*also, i couldnt find any info on this, but i noticed on the check-out page an option for financing, so if anyone could enlighten me to the ins/outs of this*

The 8800GTX is outdated now; the card of choice is definately the 4870 in that price range. It outperforms the 8800 and runs cooler and quieter.

I would recommend going for an E8400 and overclocking it if you are gaming. It will clock higher and outperform the Q6600 in games as quad cores aren't really supported. (Look at the CPU forum for endless debates about this! General consensus is that a faster dual core is better though).

Also the 650 tech in that motherboard is pretty old now as well. Go for P45 if you can afford it, or P43 if not.

Ok;

Stay away from nVidia motherboard chipsets.
Get a fast dual core instead of a quad. :)
4870 > 8800GTX for about £25 more, it's considerably better.

thanks for the replies,

ive changed my processor to the E8400 and the mobo to a p35

heres my new setup

i can now also stretch my budget to £700 and was thinking what would be the best thing to upgrade/change? also, is there much difference between vista home and premium?

thanks again

thanks again for the quick replies.

heres my new system with the advice given

also, is the upgrade from a 8870 to a gtx 280 worth it paying the extra £50

thanks

Debatable, but I would say the 4870 has the best performance for the money in the top end cards. The GTX280 is faster, but not £50 faster.

It's looking like a nice PC now with the changes you've made :)

i'd stay with the 4870, thats got a non reference cooler on it so it should be considerably cooler and quiter, the 280's have very high temperatures and the factory overclocked version in your spec, when overclocked further in the ati overdrive facility could beat the 280 in a few games. the setup above is very good indeed, 320gb would be quite small for me, for 20 quid more you could get a samsung f1 640gb which is just as fast,

Looks awesome! Like people say, the 280 is quicker, but nowhere near £50 worth faster. If you simply have money to burn, buy it. If not, don't!

The dual cores will only hold out over the Q6600s at lower resolutions. So you'll probably want to move back to the quad.

Then simply add whatever hard drive you want for size.

if i was you i wouldnt bother with that cpu cooler, id stick with the stock cooler for a while n save up until you can get something like a tuniq. it will be much better for pushing ** cpu to higher clocks.

but if you cant consider the above^ then you have it spot on.;)

hmm, will having the quad core make a major difference? as i do want this to be as future proof as possible so i'd rather spend an extra £20 now then waiting a year and spending ~100 on a new processor. thats why im sticking with the 4870 over the 4450 even though it wont make much difference with my 22" widescreen, but i may change my monitor in the future.

ive read around and dual cores are better for games as quads arn't supported in most games, but that doesn't mean this won't change? as im sure the games will be supported by quads in the future.

anyway, do i stick with the dual core? or buy a quad?
