4870 to GTX280

You would get a GTX260 which fairs quite well actually. :p

You think taking 70 quid worth of performance would make a GTX260? it would probs be slower than a GTX260 actually. Thats the cheapest GTX280, imagine taking 100+ quid worth of performance off.

GTX 260 Vs 4870 then the 4870 would be the best choice.

If the OP will go as high as he wants on budget then of course GTX280 is what he wants.

That answer seemed quite obvious to me, GTX260 is a cut down version of a GTX280 and you could easily say it's a GTX280 with £70 worth of performance taken away, or rather £80 as it's cheaper .

With the same logic your coming from you could say take £100 of performance away from a HD4870 and then how would it compare to a 8800GT? It's a stupid question

Take 70 pound from a 4870 prob get you a 4850 which is around 20-30 percent slower than the 4870. 20-30 percent from a gtx280 would give you less performance than either a 4870 or a gtx260 thats the way i am gonna look at it.

Well yea, but I'm not comparing old gen to new gen here, I'm comparing new gen to new gen.

Taking about 40 quid away from a GTX280 would probs make it a GTX260 let alone 70.

Yes GTX260 is cut down, less memory, less shaders and smaller memory bus.

What I said was in no way a stupid question.

Nothing weird about it.

It was a way of saying, do you really think the GTX280 is worth 70 quid extra?

LOL at all the debating.
I asked the question if anyone has had the two cards and can compare what they have found...more from feeling...not from benchmarks.
The 4870 I have is a good card....just that in some instances I felt my old 8800GTX was actually beter. Some games feel jittery compared to what I had before...allthough the 4870 gives me more fps. I am also slighlty peed off at stuff like drivers not installing...and having to fart arround with fan speeds etc. to get reasonable temps. The fan noise also sux.....which is of course the norm for a high perofrmace ATI card since the 9800's.
I aint really bothered about the cash bit....but at the same dont really want to pay £350 for the X2. Infact...I think I dont like ATI anyway....LOL. Every card I have had since the 9700 and 9800 has given me some grief.

Whens the 55nm 280 due?

Nope, GTX280 is not worth £80-70 extra over a GTX260/HD4870 and the HD4870X2 is not worth £80 over a GTX280 or £120 over a GTX260/HD4870 and the HD4870 is not worth £70 over a HD4850.

The best value card out is still the 8800GT, but that doesnt make it better then all the above.

Toxic you do know that the gtx series are far louder than the 4 series card. Think i seen 1 chart that showed the 4870 load noise to be around the gtx series idle noise. So moving ship won't fix that for you. It really baffles me how some people can have so much problems with a certain brand of card and don't on the other. I have had 4 ati cards with no problems at all on 3 different pc's. I have had 2 nvidia cards on 2 different pc's with no problems. Could it be because i don't heavily overclock my pc's so they are more stable?

Far louder than the 4 series card? They must sound like 2 jumbo jets rather than one then :p

That being said, while the new Nvidia cards have the acoustical profile of a freight train coming straight at you, this card is dead silent.

Straight from the hardwarecanucks review lol at the freight train.

TheRealDeal where can i get that limited edition gfx card you have :D

Looks like there is at least another HD3780XT out there from google results.

Any time in the past I owned a card with driver issues, I always swore I would have happily paid an extra £70 for good drivers from the outset.

I put up with poor ATI drivers in the early days, and then the nvidia/vista fiasco of early last year. Never again.
