When lapping is it advisable to do both the heatsink base, and the IHS of the cpu. My q6600 has a large variation in temps. @Idle 32, 28, 28, 24. @load in prime95 @3.4ghz 62, 62, 57, 56. Cooler is a TRUE120 which ive learned rarely come with a level base. Tia.

for best results you will need to do both... althought this will void your warrenties

To give you some idea this is my brothers Q6600 with a TRUE and 2 Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 @ 3.6.. under prime small fft load, solid lines are prelap of both CPU and TRUE... dot lines are post lap... even the temps to within 2c and brought the hotest cores down 10c ish

Cheers guys ill definitely go ahead and do the both of them, although the IHS wont need to much sanding as it seems pretty flat, im not to fussed about voiding the warranties. Also what grades of grit would you reccomend.

I posted my attempt HERE - it might help :)

GL !
Cheers TB, excellent guide, the pic with the masking tape and the foam is a great tip:)

and here is my thread i started on high temps which turned into lapping:

I had quite some success by doing this
So i can see mate, quite a signifigant temperature drop. Will have to nip into halfords for some wet and dry. Im a painter and decorator by trade so ive got plenty of sanding experience but unfortunately my boss never buys wet and dry just plain glasspaper, probably because its cheaper the tight git.:D cheers guys.

Lapped both my Q6600's. Made a big difference with the B3 one (as in gained me an extra 200mhz due to lower temps), but made no difference with the G0 I had (tho it was a cool runner anyway, but I wanted to uniform the temps, but failed).

What sort of speed did you achieve with the b3 cob as i believe they werent as good a clocker as the GO steppings

Went up from 3.3ghz to 3.5ghz after the lapping. It's on the first page of the quad-core database thread.

yep just had a look on there, nice temps. Regarding the batch no's of the entries on the chart, dont see to many L 8 (mines L 803a746) i take it theese are the latest batches.

Theese are a couple of screens from coretemp i took last night, the as5 seems to have cured nicely so hoping that lapping will improve things further.

What kind of load is on the CPU though.

Orthos small FTT's will make your cpu hotter than any game will. Both will report 100% load.

With my system, Orthos Blend will give me 50C load when testing the 1024k batch.
as soon as it hit the 8k batch my temps rise to 60C

Load screen was taken running prime95 small fft test for just over an hour.
