As you guys know, im looking to get a plasma for my parents. settled on the TH-42PZ85B now just looking for a good price.

But ive noticed a lot of shops seem to have a 46" version of it too... is this as good as the 42" or is it just wasting money?

Would you, if you have the money, buy a 46 or stay with the 42? they will be viewing it from 7-10ft away.

TYIA

ColiN - still looking for a good price and delivery lol.

Bought a 50" viewing from 6'. Have had 28" CRT, 32" LCD, 40" RP, now 50" So I'd go for the 46. 42" is still a good size but for 2:35 movies you need a big screen, due to large black borders making the image a good few inches smaller than the whole panel.

Why the PZ85, it's overpriec and the lesser models offer better value for money. Especially because of the silly IFC which makes the picture wierd on the PZ85.

Check out the PZ81, but one question do you have a satellite dish installed ?

No, using VM cable at the mo. was told by others that the PZ85 was the better one to go for, will check the 81.

Hi,

I ordered a Sony KDL40W4000 and ended up changing the order to a 46"

I also changed it from a Sony KDL40W4000 to a Sony KDL46W4500 which is out next week. I am pretty excited! - upgrading from a 28" CRT.

I also bought an Alphason 1100B unit for the TV with free delivery for £144

It was much more than I planned to spend, which I hope I won't regret.

It's up to you really.

badbob sits 6' from a 50" and that's ok for him. I sit 8' from a 42" and I wouldn't want to be any closer.

You pays your money and takes your choice.

One thing I've seen is that at 42"+ SD starts to look bad, so if you're watching a lot of non-HD and non-upscaled content, you might not enjoy it as much.

If not, though, the biggest you can get is the way to go  :D

50" screen with 2:35 movies is actually 47" image :) For movies you really do need a big screen, to make it immersive. Rather than a small TV in the distance.

SD DVD looks superb, just SD sky can look a bit ropey on the channels with lower bitrate.

You need a 9G kuro, much better SD than my 8G 42incher :D

True but relatively it probably takes up more of your vision than a 32" in typical viewing conditions. Brother has a 32" LCD and it's just way too small. 40" is good size from 2M though, had a 32" and great for 4:3 but not films. I think 50" from 2M is biggest I'd go for the room size. And at least 1080p makes it worthwhile :-)

I have a 50" panasonic and sit just under 3m away... Great for 16:9 movies but 2.4:1 leaves me wishing it was a bit bigger to be honest :)

SD content generally looks great. Sky Sports looks fantastic but some of the lower bitrate channels can look blocky.

The PZ80 and PZ85 have the same res and ports on the back, i think i read this right, just making sure before i make a £900 mess. The only diff is the IFA thing that people turn off? and the PZ800 has better sound and thats it is it???

Just making sure i got it right in my head.

Well, the PZ80/81 have one HDMI port on the front, so if you are going to use all 3 and don't want cables showing then the choice would be the PZ85.

Go for the 80 if its style doesnt bother you. In reality it looks cheap and nasty compared to the 85 (imho). This is the silver bit at the bottom.

Although IFC is a bit of a gimmick, it is meant to work on HD material, but can have negative effects elsewhere.

Also, if you go for an 80 then try to get one with later firmware (1106+) which is meant to have a better SD picture quality.

Check out avforums (can i say that) as it has a wealth of info. If you want the best get a pioneer.

I sit only about 2.5m at the most from my 50". I though it would look enormous but after 4 hours of viewing I got used to it. Now I think I could manage to go bigger!

However, when it's not on, it seems to be bigger  So a 60" is highly unlikely.
