Is anyone going to import Disgaea 3 for the PS3 at the end of the month? I like my SRPG ever since i played Final Fantasy Tactics, never tried Disgaea on the PS2 though.
Theres a review of the Japan edition here http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/Disgaea_3/index.html Seems not bad TBH, a good way to to warm up before Valkyria Chronicles comes out in november.
The graphics look average at best, hires sprites, but I dont think it matters for these game TBH, I know a few people have played them on the PS2 on here, so how does Disgaea compare to say FF tactics?

Looks like just my sort of thing, think i saw a vid of it a couple of months back and it looked brill. Is it getting a UK release? Can't read a word of japanese and i imagine that's fairly important when playing a JRPG in its native tongue.

[EDIT] Just realized you meant the US release imported, but still, is there a UK release?

Also, i've never played any of the series, will i get along with it? I loved games like FF:Tactics and vandal hearts.

Hiya, I'm Ol!ver's 'missus' (will be having words about that later!)

As he said, I'm importing this as soon as it's released, in my opinion Disgaea is the best SRPG series out there. I think anyone who's played FFT will pick it up fairly quickly, as a lot of the core gameplay mechanics are similar. Where these games stand out though, is in the story, which is generally more lighthearted (and funny) than other games in the genre, and in the absolutely insane amount of depth the game has.

This depth is optional though, and anyone who just wants to play through the story will get a 20-30 hour experience well worth having. For the completionists among us though, there's a lot more to get your teeth into! Each character from your pool of 30+ members can be built up to level 9999, then reincarnated to level 1 and built up again for bonus stats. In addition to all the human classes available almost every moster you encounter can be captured and used in battle. There are 6 weapon types which each (human) class can build up in mastery to level 255 for additional skills and strength, and EVERY SINGLE item in the game, from the strongest weapons to the weakest healing items can be levelled by entering their own randomly generated worlds and battling there.

And this is all before the dark assembly, where you can unlock new areas to play through (with their own storylines), extra bosses and hidden characters to add to your party. Basically, there's a lot of bang for your buck!

All the games have seperate stories, save a few cameos for fanservice, so you won't miss anything by jumping in at 3, although I do highly recommend the first 2 games, especially if you can import PS2 games, as the first one has just gone greatest hits in the US, and can now be had for $19.99. Alternatively, it's been ported to the PSP and is soon to appear on the DS, and both these versions have additional content not available in the original. I've spent an obscene amount of hours on Disgaea 1&2, and I'm still going back to them. And I hear someone in Japan's spent 1200 hours on one save of Disgaea 3!

So, it's a hearty 2 thumbs up from me and an extremely long first post!

Excellent first post there. I think you've talked me into importing as it seems there isn't a planned UK release at all.

[EDIT] now i just need to find somewhere to import it from.

I have problems with disgaea, I really like it but it annoys me havoing to go back and repeat every level 10 times just to level everyone up. Am I doing soemthing wrong ? Im playing afternoon of darkness on PSP. I have about 5 characters at around level 16 and about 8 more all hovering around level 6. i cant begin to imagine the amount of time it would take to get to level 9999 or even getting there and starting again.

Just found it for a little under £30 (including shipping) imported. Looks like i'll be buying it as if it ever does make it to the UK, i'm sure it'll be more expensive than that.

JaFFa, you're not doing anything wrong, that's the way the game is. There are a few things you can do to make things easier on yourself though. In the beginning you don't really need that many characters, all you'll do is spread the EXP out further than you need to. Laharl, Etna, a physical attacker or 2, cleric and offensive mage (star, if you've unlocked it) should see you through the first few chapters. It's a good idea to create your offensive mage as your cleric's pupil and teach him/her a damage spell or 2 to keep their level up and give you an extra attacker.

If anyone is lagging behind, try team attacks to finish off enemies, as anyone who takes part will get EXP. Or, you can throw enemies onto each other to create a higher levelled one, have your strongest members whittle it down and give a weak one the finishing blow for a lot of EXP.

There's a few maps in the game which are regarded as good levelling maps, these are the ones where you'll ramp your levels up quickly and use to catch up newly created members. Depends on where you are though, the first one's in chapter 5.

There's also specialists you can subdue in the item world which increase the amount of EXP you gain by up to 300%. I wouldn't worry about that too much for now though, to be honest most of the levelling you do will be much later and in the postgame stuff, 60-70 should be fine to finish the story.

Wow, I'm gonna get a rep round here for posting walls of text! Hope some of that helps out, let me know if there's anything else I can help with!

I played the arse off Disgaea 1 and 2.

And I actually bought a PS3 last weekend JUST to play Disgaea 3 at the end of the month :D

BTW, email me if you want to know a good importer ;)

ReJackson - Thanks, some good tips there.

oddly ive just started chapter 5, Its slow progress, Ive been using flonne as my cleric type character and have prob 5 good characters to fight with. Its still very slow progress, not how Im used to playing RPG's but I like it.

WHich level on Chapter 5 is good for levelling ? I have ben kind of ignoring etna becuase she appeared at the start as if she was going to turn on me, so I decided not to level her up incase she left the party. Mistake ?

Come on, everyone knows that in any RPG, if a character turns on you, it doesn't matter how tough they were when they left your party, they'll come back tougher than you'll ever be. So don't worry about that ;)

Not telling you what happens with Etna tho :p

haha I didnt mean she'd turn on me and Id have to fight her, I meant I spend all that time levelling her up and she runs off leaving me a player down. I wanted to spend the time levelling some one who would stick around.

Using Etna or not is a matter of personal preference, it's the same with all the story characters. I only use her because I find the increased attack range of a spear useful, and some of her unique attacks are pretty powerful. You'll not really lose anything by swapping her out for another attacker though.

The third map in Chapter 5 is the good levelling one, all the squares but one are covered with invincibility geo panels, making it a great place for the 'throw enemies into each other, create uber enemy, smash uber enemy and go from level 1 to 20 instantly' trick. The first few times you do it though you might want to create 2 semi uber enemies, as if your level is too low compared to theirs you won't touch them.

Yeah I got it Monday.
It rocks :)

Well...... if you like Disgaea then you'll like Disgaea 3, that's pretty much all that can be said.

The story doesn't seem too original at the moment. Has more than a few similarities with Disgaea1.
There's a bunch more complexity in it though with Magichange and team special attacks and 3d geo cubes and joining clubs.

One gripe I do have though is that the text is SOOOO hard to read on an SDTV :(
Why can't they just make text bigger and thicker for us unfortunates who can't upgrade yet ?

Disgaea player and from Sheffield? Is no-one working in this city today?

After my horrendous addiction to the first and then the even better PSP version, its probably for the best that I avoid this.

I played the 2nd for a short while but it just wasn't as good as the first.

Just got mine this morning, managed to dodge import tax so it rang in at just under £30 including postage. Gotta laugh that the game will have a release price of at least £35 here IF it even gets released.

First impressions:

Well, the only games i have played in this genre would be Vandal Hearts 1 + 2 and compared to those this game looks DEEP, like, deep as the ocean, can't wait to learn the ins and outs.

Oh and the criticism of the graphics in the IGN review are totally unfair imo, yes they are below average, but they criticize the resolution of the sprites as being non-hd which i would argue they are infact HD. It's just that in dialogue sections it zooms in a bit, obviously making the sprites seem a lower res, you can also zoom in close during battles and while walking about but you can see so little i see no point in this 'close zoom'. I just stick the the 2nd level of zoom where you can see the majority of the map and the sprites look their best.

So yeah, it's looking good so far, especially considering i'm not very well practiced in this genre.
