Fast Car - £5000

Can't get insurance on an Impreza turbo.

Oh, sorry.

Is there anything other than a Clio? I do actually like them but there must be something else you could think of.

Integra?
Jordan Civic?

I'd give an Integra and a Clio a really good thrash test and then make a decision. On looks I'm not sure. Coupes aren't my thing and I love hot hatches coming from the 205gti days but I like both cars so tough choice.

Very well sorted 205GTI 16V and a years track day tickets - job done ;)

A DC2 is probably the closest match to the Clio, you will have trouble getting insured on a JDM one, plus the 98spec ones are still pricey IMO.

You should be able to get a decent UKDM, but the problem you're going to have is finding one. Most in the UK are JDM, and due to their age a lot will have higher mileage than you're looking for. Which isn't a problem mechanically, but might be mentally :)

Scooby would be my first choice, followed by either an olde skool Escort RS Turbo, 5K should secure a top quality 200BHP+ version or a Saab 93 Turbo with a remap.

I'd be happy with any of those is anyone is feeling generous? :D

I'm not really keen on the DC2's styling.

An Impreza turbo........on paper, to 100, isn't that much quicker than a Clio 182.

It's probably not much standard, but it's got more tuning potential.

I didn't find insurance too bad on the UK 2000 Turbo's, where have you been looking?

On paper? Too much of what is spouted on this very forum is "on paper" opinions.

I had a 106 rallye stuck to my rear bumper once in my Impreza and that shouldn't have even got a look in "on paper".

I really like feeling like your sat on top of a car if you get me. Clio you feel sat on top of it, felt the same with Focus ST and I'm not exactly tall. DC2 you feel sat IN the car. I guess its just the shape and driving position.

I'd probably go DC2 but again probably a UKer as I don't like the front of JDMs.

Thats because on paper, a few seconds are an absolute age in performance terms. In the real world - count to two.

Not very long is it. It takes a LOT more power to comfortably leave somebody else as if they were going backwards. A lot more than most people on this forum think.

There isn't much in it. UK Impreza turbos aren't that quick atall as standard. I remember when I first got mine it felt like a rocket ship, but that was because it was the first real 'performance' car I owned, but the truth is modern hot-hatches are easily a match for a UK Impreza turbo. 4wd losses mean WHP/ton is fairly similar.

I had a 'play' with one the other day, and I couldn't believe how easily I beat him, and it wasn't by a small margin either, I absolutely raped him. It had an exhaust, but other than that it was stock (apart from a DV). And yes, he was certainly trying, because we spoke after :)

Which is what? 18 seconds or so?

I've seen figures of 16.5 - 18.3 seconds for the Clio 182 listed on various sources. I'd think mid to late 17 seconds 0 - 100 mph is probably about right.

Is you Skyline quite a rapid bit of kit then? I haven't kept up on its progress.

It's ~320bhp, so it's not bad, but in all honesty I was pretty shocked at how poorly the scoob faired against it. At the recent R/R day I came across an EVO 5 when taking a couple of OCuKers out for a spin, and there was nothing in it between my car and the EVO, but the scoob was going backwards in comparison.

I still love scoobs, but I wouldn't bother with a UK car if I were to get another.

Allegedly Scoobydoo69 insured a WRX and an STi under the age of 21. You might want to ask him how. If he ever posts again.

To get insured on an impreza turbo young, you'll have to go off the beaten track and go with some unusual insurers

I believe Scoobydoo69 got his through a specialist broker that posts on scoobynet. They beat everybody else's quotes out of the water, as they target the scooby enthusiast owners on scoobynet. Presumably they work on them being enthusiasts, and less likely to crash their impreza turbos being on an owners forum, then your average scooby driver.

And of course, this type of driver wont be cheap, i bet it doesnt make many people not to claim for them to start making money.

Also, with these type of brokers, they ask about experience so they can use this to barter with insurance companies. To some female insurance clerk behind a desk, the point that the client has experience having driven a Group 18 Impreza SPort and Wanting to upgrade to a Group 20 Turbo seems as though the client has experience driving this sort of performance car, without fully appreciating the difference between the hideously slow (for what it is) Sport, and the Turbo.

I believe this is how scooby got his STI / WRX insurance too, using his previous experience to get a good deal. Thats presumably how the broker on scoobynet barters with insurers, as most specialist brokers (theres one on the VXR Forums) say they can get you good deals, providing you've got a years experience of driving the car, or similar performance car. Again, the Sport and Turbo dont compare, but i can see why some female insurance clerk who knows jack about cars apart from whats written down on paper would think so.
