My Mondeo (04, tdci) last night has a very funny technical issue.

When driving then temp guage drops to 0, i loose power and the car accellerates very slowly.

After a quick switch on and off the car is fine again for another 10-30 mins.

I suspect its the turbo, and thats what the AA man said.

I need the car fixed asap, would any garage apart from ford be able to do a diagnosis on the car, or is Ford the best place to go (they just have a long waiting list right now which is putting me off).

If you car is no longer under warranty then I wouldn't be going to a dealer anyway! Just look up your local Ford specialist and take it to them. They should be able to plug it into their diags machine and find out what's up, and it'll be half the price of the stealer!

OMGBBQ, surely a Mondeo can't go wrong? ;) Makes me laugh on these forums sometimes when people get digs in at manufacturers. Just shows you get problems in all makes. :D

+1 for a decent Indy, who will probably do a better job anyway without the use of spotty YTS grease monkeys tbqh. Perhaps ask local cabbies that drive Fords who they use? Good luck :)

Cheers guys, yeah a Mondeo can actually break down!

I've got it booked in at my local autolec for a ECU read (£35 + vat).

The worst thing that could happen is it takes a while to fix and i have to use the abandoned Fiesta 1.25 that my sister left when she got married (she has yet to pick it up and its been over a month now).

£35+vat to read your fault codes?!!!!!!!! What a rip-off. Find a Mondeo owners club website, sign up to their forums and ask for someone in your area to give you a hand! On Audi-Sport we have a thread dedicated to helping find people with VAG-COM diagnostics locally and most of us will do it for free (well a drink or two is the unofficial going rate!). Not much help for a Mondeo owner but most communities would be willing to help like this.

I can't imagine the temperature gauge would be affected by a faulty turbo. Do you get the MIL lighting up when this happens?

MIL? No lights show when this problem occurs.

I know £35 is a bit OTT, but i'm sure they reduce the final fixing cost minus the original diagnosis price.
I'm even aware i could buy a fault code reader for less than the price of this!

Update, error code P1288, which is a cylinder head temp sender.

So not really a reliability issue, could happen to anyone.

A new sender costs £25 + vat from Ford, not sure how much the labour will be for fitting it.

It's simply a sender unit screwed in the side of the head.

Anticipate 30min-1hr labour. Possibility of needing to bleed system after.

Incidentally, £35 for the diagnosis is not OTT. It's about market rate, depending on the area.

Taking your car to an independent garage will not affect your warranty claims, an independent garage can make a warranty claim on your behalf.

I have nothing constructive to say about this topic, sorry. :)

seconded. Good diagnostic equipment will set a garage back around £10000 people who expect the diagnostics charge to be free or just a fiver are kidding themselves.

Replacing the sensor takes about 10 minutes but the system may have to be bled and certainly topped up and then test drove over a hot cold cycle, this takes a bit longer.

Its all done!

I'm quite releived, today just cost £56 + vat.

So a total of £137 inc vat for the whole problem.
