Guys, i recently took ownership of my Grandads old car but its just run out of tax. Its still registered in his name (it wont be registered in mine for at least 3 weeks) - is it still ok for me to tax it? How do i go about doing that?

cheers

If you do it online then it'll get posted to the address on the V5

If you want to walk into a post office you need the V5 document (log book), a valid MOT certificate and a valid insurance document.

lol - good point Skeeter.

Last time i got disc from P.O - i queued for ages only to realise i'd left one of the docs I needed at home - doh!

Just take the v5 slip you retained with the usual documents to a post office. Still plenty around as long as you have transport.

the problem i have is this:

When i took ownership of the car i singed the green tear off on the V5 and posted it to the DVLA as per the instructions. Having spoken with the DVLA they never received it and as such, the car remains registered in my Grandads name (stupid royal mail). So, On the remaining V5 document it said:

'if you are the new keeper of this vehicle but your name does not appear above then please fill in the back of this form and post it to the DVLA'. So i signed ni the back of the V5 and posted it to them yesterday. Its only this morning that i realise the only way to get my car taxed is by having the current V5 document - which i dont as its currently in the post to the DVLA. So i cant tax the car and as such cant drive the damn thing.

any ideas? When i phoned the DVLA some arab told me a load of rubish that i simply could not understand!

oh ok - im thinking we may have sent the tear off green slip and NOT the larger part of the document to the DVLA - i take it that is the wrong way around?
