Hello there...

I know the question has been asked a million times...and no one really has the answer other than myself...So hey, here it goes.

I've been in the same job now since I left school, so 5 years+. This was basically a standard PC builder. Since then I've gone up into servers etc, and now I test the servers among other thing's. I also assemble our server cabinets, and deploy them on customer sites...

Now to be honest, I've been here far too long, it isn't going anywhere, my pay is not going to go through the roof any time soon (or ever for that matter)...And yeah, I'm just stuck

So I'm not sure what job role I really want to go into next? I don't fancy being in sales, or stuck on a phone, or anything along those lines...But all I seem to find, are the above jobs, or maybe the odd field engineers job, which to be fair can be boring on it's own.

Do I stick with PC's? or go elsewhere? It's hard to say myself...seeing as that's all I really "know", so to speak. :(

Have you thought about computer journalism/testing?

I know the company that I work for (that I can't mention here) are always looking for knowledgeable and enthusiastic additions.

i'm in the same boat as you Delvis , though i cant even get in to IT :P

Well depends where you want to start matey...I started at the build side...You can always start on the support side to gain knowledge quickly.

Oh i've tried that and failed mate :) last quallification was

City & Guilds: Level III Advanced Diploma for I.T. Practitioners (ICT Systems Support)

gotten me zip, Still look for the Junior jobs etc but dont even get interview

Cisco networking perhaps? I imagine you'd need a degree to get into software development or computer engineering.

Anything Cisco related...Then yeah you would need something to be even noticed to start a job involving Cisco to be honest...Not eactly cheap kit so to speak.

Even though I've handled stuff that costs loads =/

That's my one downfall I think...I don't know if I should have gone to uni to get some kinda degree. But then on the other hand, half the time It's pointlessm unless the Degree is related to the job you are going for.

I got into tech journalism after studying film and television at university, and working the usual office jobs - my only experiences with computers were for my own builds as an enthusiast.

I now test components and systems, and write reviews for the site I work for, which is perhaps the largest of it's kind in the UK.

Our offices are in Borehamwood, Herts - and I know for a fact that we're currently looking for more people to be involved in the testing side.

Sounds cool....

See, I love testing new equipment, just because it's different. See if I can find issues with it, or just seeing how pants it is when I run various stress programs on it :p

Sounds too good actually! hah.

Retail as in what though?

Theres a fair few thing's involving retail I would have thought...

You really need to get your head into some books, do an evening course leading to a Degree. Sorry but a C&G quailification in IT isn't going to stand out on a CV.

Money wise it also depends on what you earn now.

If you're in a 40k a year job then saying move into a support team role might prove hard finding something that pays as much.

That was a badly worded example but hopefully you get what I mean :)

With 5 years experience though I'd not worry about the degree imho, guys get hired here who barely have A levels and are on good money in an IT role.

What do you think you would like to do?

do you want to be stuck at a desk
Do you want to be travelling but working indoors
Do you want to work outdoors
Do uyou want to travel and be out doors.

Do you want to work with people, on the phone, manual labour type jobs (this doesn't mean low paid unskilled)

Basically think about what environment and what sort of things you wnat to do. then we can suggest a whole list of jobs.

Torquay? Probably because its sparsely populated compared to here :p

No, a company that covers Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, me being based in Exeter but with offices in other cities too. Still not a huge area but that covers palces like Bristol, Plymouth, Swindon as well, plenty of people in those areas looking for decent IT jobs :) There's naff all IT jobs available in Torquay worth having, some NHS stuff there but pretty much bugger all else :(

I know plenty of people working in IT all over the country who do not have degress and earn significant amounts of money.

I must be being taken for a fool then, I'm on minimum wage doing just that...
