Hi

Looking for the for's & against's of buying either console as mentioned, really like the PS3 and xBox360 elite but have heard of the problems with the xBox's dying.
Any truth in that? I believe that more games are available for xBox, i like splinter cell series - what is available that is similar to that?

Thanks in advance.

Ive never owned a ps3.. but I have a 360

I know that next Splinter Cell is 360 exclusive, I'm pretty sure the 360's RRoD problem is not high anymore with newer models, has a great online service which you get what you pay for! and some real great exclusive games e.g Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Rock Band 2 (timed exclusive) etc and yes 360 has more games iirc

This thread could get messy!!

PS3:
+ Blu ray
+ looks (if thats your thing)
+ Quieter than xbox at present
- Lacks in games comapred to 360
- Expensive
- losing game exclusives

Xbox:
+ Cheaper than PS3
+ Better games
+ Awesome xbox live/achivements
- Quite Noisy when suing disk drive
- RROD has been an issue although you now get 3 years warranty (im still on my launch day console :) )

The next splinter cell which is a 360 exclusive has drawn comparisons to MGS4 on the PS3, more decent exclusives are coming out for the PS3 and it has very good media capabilities.

The 360 has a large back catalogue of quality games and very promising exclusives due out over the next year or so.

The elite is priced quite closely to the PS3 so I'd try out both consoles and make a decision from that if I were you.

I wouldn't worry about reliability as MS appears to have solved the early problems. Unless noise or Blu-ray is important to you I'd base your decision entirely on the games that are out/coming out. The 360 is noisier, but soon you'll be able to install the game to the hard drive resulting in no loud disc drive access.

Certainly the PS3 is beginning to see some quality exclusive titles in the pipeline (Heavy Rain, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet), but currently I'd still opt for the Xbox 360. You'll even be able to play Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox and the majority of other third party games are also heading to Xbox.

Ive got the Elite. One of the newer low power ones. No problems with it whatsoever the disk tray isnt too noisy like my original 360 that is at my girlfriends. Really happy with it! :)

Very good summary.

I own both and would recommend the PS3, since buying the PS I've almost stopped using the 360 all together.

I prefer PSN to LIVE (controversial), I prefer the games currently available and forthcoming and generally just have no desire to use my 360 as time's gone on :(

Just depends which you fancy buying more :)

I'm quite the opposite but then again I do like rpgs...

Is that really worth the extra £70 though? I'm assuming that's the price of an elite.
For me no, if you've only got a max of 3-4 games on the go at any one time you'll be fine with a 60GB.

I tried to explain this to a mate, but he insisted he had to buy the Elite because it was 'better'.

I swear we need to pin up this thread so that this questions doesn't keep getting asked!

Also
"+ Better games"
This is personal preference/opinion. I think anyone will be happy with either of the console's library of games now.

"+ Awesome xbox live/achivements"
PSN has many of the features of XBL now, including achievements (and is free).

I guess I will add some things for your information:
* Xbox 360 Wireless adapter is about £40-50, which when added to Elite's price, brings it up to PS3's pricepoint. Also note the £30/yr for XBL Gold.
* PS3 doesn't require you to use their official accessories (eg. headset, keyboard, web cam). However PS3 doesn't bundle a decent headset like Xbox does.

PS: Can't believe PS3 is only 289 now. Remember when it used to be £420!

Good list but would like to point out when the next update arrives for the Xbox the noise when accessing the disc will be less of a problem as they will then allow us to load games from the hard drive. Also I think you would be pretty unlucky to have newly manufactured console go wrong, they seem pretty reliable compared to the first few version.

Excellent analysis...thanks, and thanks to everyone else too.

I've just been to a store to look at the games, having noticed on the back covers most of the latest 360 games seem to make out they are 720p/1080p is this true? Cos i've known in the past that the PS3 was apparently far superior for these 720p/1080p games, though looking at the covers too show that most are indeed only 720p (PS3). I do have the Samsung 37" bordeaux tv that does HD, though i'm totally torn between them both (consoles). I did read somewhere that the next splinter cell game was to be released on PS3 also.

Regarding 720/1080p, the vast majority of Xbox 360 games run natively at 720p but the console scaler can output at a variety of resolutions including 1080p.

Is your TV 720P or 1080P? Most 360 games show 720p/1080p on the back because it scales. The PS3 games show their native resolution on the back.

I think they both have an equalish amount of genuine 1080p disc based titles, but in terms of downloadable PSN/XBL games the PS3 has more 1080P titles. tbh This gen there will probably be more 720P titles overall so not a major issue in terms of a purchasing decision. The most 1080P content will be movies on Blu-Ray, not games.

I agree with the guy who has both consoles and said he doesn't turn his 360 on much. Initially when I had both the 360 was still getting a lot more playtime, now it is quite the opposite.

Both have more than enough games now tbh. I am sure you can find 50 decentish games on both platforms easily (obviously most of these are cross-platform games). The handful of exclusives in that list is probably what should swing it for you, assuming games is your only priority.

I did read somewhere that the next splinter cell game was to be released on PS3 also.

Next Splinter Cell game is definitely 360 exclusive. If Splinter Cell series is your favourite then 360 all the way (I think some of the older games work via Backwards Compatibility as well).

The Splinter Cell: Double Agent is multiplatform (though I'm sure I read somewhere the PS3 port wasn't much good, might be wrong here) but Splinter Cell: Conviction is 360 exclusive and due next year.

If you like this style of game I'd recommend Assassin's Creed with which ever console you pick up.
