Deos power (lack) affect system performance?

Just purchased a barebones (OcUKfs-085-ok) and stuck a 8800 GT (leadteck) in it and 500gb HD in it (one of the optioal choices)

I'm having slowdow/fastfwd frame rate probs on Medieval II and other apps.

The powersupply is only 300w (rated 260 peak 300)

Is this enough and could this be the source of the prob?

I should have thought the barebone would come with a PSU beefy enough to drive all the options it suggests are available!

Any clues anyone.

Oh - yes and BTW - just what is the AMD Core-Duo Optimiser supposed to do? (Yes I have read the FAQs)
4Mb download produces a 76k EXE file - when you run the EXE nothing happens???

Sounds more like driver/software problem. Also you never know about compatibility of these ready mini platforms... "non easter egg" shops comment about motherboard isn't good.
Also how much shovelware it has running on background?

Can you take photo from spec sticker of PSU?
(lack of power shows as instability/crashes)

AMD Core-Duo Optimiser
No such thing as AMD Core Duo!

I think he means the Dual core optimizer from AMD.

Op try running 3d winmark 06 and see what score you get.

Have you connected the 6 pin power plug to the 8800GT. Youd have to use a 2 molex to pci-e 6pin adaptor tho as that barebone dosent have a dedicated PCI-E 6 pin plug on the psu

Molex = Yes plugged in 2x
Drivers = self deployed XP professional + all necessary drivers from supplied disks - All Sys devices ok in system=> hardware

BTW - Photo of PSU to follow in 10 mins

Next question - how do i post the pic (JPG 54k) to the forum ??

And Shovelwhere is negligable as it's virus/malwhere free and no McAfee - Oh that rhymes - (or VP of any description) (I built it so)

Ah Imageshack - What great util site

As u can see the PSU is a bit mean to run
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000 + 3.00GHz Dual Core CPU
- Asus Vintage V3-M2NC61P
- 8800GT Leadteck
- OCZ 5400 4GB (2x2GB) 667MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (To be replaced with advertised Geil 6400 4GB)
- Hard Drive - 500GB Hitachi
- Samsung 22x Dual Layer DVD ReWriter

It is possible that the PSU could be restricting performance, but it sounds like you have other potential issues to eliminate before we jump to any conclusions.

First of all, make sure that you have the latest chipset drivers and graphics drivers installed. Then try 3D winmark 06 as RJC mentioned. Post the score here.

Just had word to post the Mem back to Oclockers for swap for the advertised stuff - what a nice company they are

V quick to sort things like that out

so I guess i'll raise this thread again when I have the new Men Installed

In the meantime - comment about the PSU would be useful

With thanks - Graham

psu is manufactured by delta, good brand that, mostly known for thier fans ;)

250w psu, says not to exceed 235w draw on the combined 3.3, 5 and 12v rails. total 12v power not to exceed 19 amps. a bit on the low side but depending on the rest of the system spec it could be more than adequate.

iv seen these pcus come in a lot of standard dell and hp systems.

your system had a 8800gt in it and you could be riding that psu to its limits. if you want to be safe grab something cheap like a corsair 450w, it has 30 odd amps on the 12v rails and you can pull up to around 390ish watts of power off the 12v rails alone. more than enough for your system.

if you can get a multimeter to check your voltage rails if you suspect your voltmonitoring software may be dodgey.

my advice would be based on your spec:
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000 + 3.00GHz Dual Core CPU
- Asus Vintage V3-M2NC61P
- 8800GT Leadteck
- OCZ 5400 4GB (2x2GB) 667MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (To be replaced with advertised Geil 6400 4GB)
- Hard Drive - 500GB Hitachi
- Samsung 22x Dual Layer DVD ReWriter

250w psu is worth changing out for something with more juice in it.

Nice info Cyber-May

I have old 1400 AMD rig I'm going to replace (Please note Oclockers) so I'll grab the 450 PSU from that.

I'll use this one for my electric toothbrush

More on 3D winmark 06 later (I've got pizza in the oven)

Well, there's actual beef in this hamburger...
Delta is quite good low profile maker, they just aren't suchvisible in retail market as many others. But as total full load draw is awfully high compared to PSU which has clearly been sized for integrated graphic card.

8800GT peaks around 80W and those 90nm/Windsor (Brisbane based 6000+ is clocked to 3.1GHz) high end 64 X2s are very power hungry with 100+ W full load consumption. Then add few dozens of watts for other components.
This is where quality shows... general low quality 250W junk would have probably let out the magic smoke or done something more spectacular.

So in this case I'll actually recommend bigger PSU.

But what's the rating on that (take a pic) 450W one & is it ATX 2.x spec? See, modern day PSU are better designed & more (power) efficient.

I'm with Cyber-Mav, pick-up the cheap but good Corsair 450W PSU ;)

I agree with changing the PSU but I will also follow up on 4th Sep 2008, 06:42 PM #9

and get 3D Mark 06 working on It

One thing I would say is that - in Medieval II the FR seems to be brill for -say 7 seconds and then die to 1-2 FPS for 5 secs

I wonder if the 3D Mark 06 score will spot this variation and give enough info to solve the prob?

hp7909

The PSU in in the old rig is actualy new(ish) as I replaced it recently (I'll get photo soon - just got to get the side off the house to get to it - LOL)

Thanks

To follow on about 3D mark scores

Mine (when it eventual finished)
Your system 3DMark Score 3661
SM 2.0 Score 1927
SM 3.0 Score 1805
CPU Score 659
CPU Speed 3014 MHz
Memory 3072 MB (This result is odd as there supposed to be 2x2GB OCZ 5400 in there)

Anybody got any clues?
