motherboard 12v or 2x4 help needed Urgent Help

Onsite with this build can anyone advise please

Hello I have a gigabyte ga-ep45-ds3r/ds3 motherboard and it has an 8 pin atx_12v_2x4 socket. the manual says that if the mobo has an 8 pin socket use the 8 block connector. The manual goes on to say if the mobo has only a 4 pin socket just unclip half of the block. Last time I plugged the whole 8 block into the mobo it burn't out. This may have been caused by me not using those spacers to keep the mobo of the inside of the case. My question is should the system run with just the 4 pin in or am I supposed to use all 8 pins?

Using a E8400 dual core cpu

Four pin ATX12V cable can easily deliver enough power for normal CPUs but if motherboard has connector/PSU cable why not to use 8 pin EPS12V cable... at least if that happens to be recommended in motherboard's manual.
 
If its got a 24pin header, then just plug the 24 pin plug straight in, ony have to separate the 4 extra ones if there is only a 20pin header

straight forward really!

So is this a new/replacement MB?

Connecting the 8 pin plug correctly to the 8 pin socket will not damage anything as that is how it should be connected. But if you have damaged the PSU or not corrected the missing motherboard stand-offs it may not work or even go bang again.:eek:
 
Try doing a CMOS reset, have you got power to your gpu if it requires it.
Try only one stick of ram.
 
Are you sure you're not plugging in an 8 pin PCI-E connector into the mobo, if so and assuming it would even fit then this could account for the mobo going up in smoke? What PSU do you have?

You also mention not fitting the mobo correctly the last time, did you not use the mobo stand-offs and screw it directly to the mobo tray, if so then this is the reason why it burnt out.
 
ok taken a stick or ram out and the machine boots however the machine will fail to boot randomly and u get a blue screen saying that windows has shut down the pc to protect it. reboot again and windows boots ok reset again and get fatal errors etc any ideas?
 
You might need to check your memory voltage, this should be printed on the side of the memory modules.
If your old board failed then it could have corrupted your windows installation.
