So I've got my new toy this mornin and ran 3dMark06. Score was bad tho @ 11485, it was only 39 points higher than my 320GTS which was overclocked 640/1660/1000 (score11446). Any ideas? I installed the lastest 8.8catalyst drivers

Yeah, tried Crysis. It's not a bad improvement with the settings on high but nothin to write home about. I'm gonna try Grid and CoD4 on max settings.

4 series does not score well on 3dmark06 plus 3dmark06 is very, very cpu limited especially since it only runs at 1280 x 1024

I went from a 850 overclock 8800GTS 512Mb to my 4870 and my 3dmark06 score actually dropped.

However my vantage score went up considerably and all games framerates increased substantially.

3dmark 06 is a dated piece of ****, that is all there is to say on the matter really.

It does not give a good infication of how fast your system is.

i went from a 8800 gtx , then 2 3870`s in cross fire , and the difference in crysis was amazing on my new 4870 to me and thats at very high have you made sure your drivers were proper cleaned out?

Looking at your Sig it's your CPU that's bottlenecking.

I have a E6400 had it running at stock and got under 10K then after a small OC flew up to 13k iirc.

Ran Driver cleaner twice, once after nvidia drivers were uninstalled and again after reboot.

Yeah I had a hunch it might be bottlenecking. Oh well, new cpu then.....:D

Which is better for the cards oc? CCC or EXPERtool?

I agree!

I went from an e2160@ 3.2ghz to the e8500 in sig and say big gains in my scores.

Framerates of some games also benefitted quite a lot too!

Thanks,

My suggestion is: don't worry about synthetic benchmarks, they mean nothing.

In real-world gaming you will get a dramatic increase, and if you keep resolution + details high the CPU won't be as much of a hindrance as you may think. Just overclock it to get a little boost.

3DMark06 is no longer a graphics card benchmark so ignore it. It is totally CPU bound.

If you still want to use it and get meaningful results test at very high res and with full AA & AF

With crossfired 4850s though (Which you should have mentioned tbh). You need more CPU power for those cards to release the full potential. As Richdog has said, a decent resolution with AA/AF will be fine. Trust me, I run 1600x1200 up to 2048x1536 (title dependant) and I can easily see the gains.

Even at 1280x1024 on the Crysis benchmark I seen 3-4 FPS gain with the 4870 at stock compared to my 8800GTX @ 630Mhz core/ 1630Mhz Shaders/ 1000Mhz mem. Then after a little overclocking I seen the gain rise to around 8-9FPS so I was pretty impressed as Crysis shows little gains than any other title I've seen so far. Everything else I've tested has been exceptional :).
