Hey folks. new on the forum and new to having a customised PC.

well, i used OC's PC builder. heres what i got in a bigarse box the other day

Antec 900 case
abit IP35 Pro
Q6600
4gb or ram
2x 8800 GT
creative sound card
seagate barracude 500gb HD
blueray drive
1000w ProXStream PSU

happy as a mint with it, except the Power Supply is waaayy louder than i thought.
its as loud, if not louder than the old TIME computer at my folks' house.
its distractingly noisy. more annoying than my 3 year old laptop on full pelt.

at first i thought it was the collective noise of all the case fans, cpu fan, gfx fans psu.
shoving my ear up to each one, its quite clear its the power supply.

before posting i searched the forum for some answeres. it seems PSU noise is something a lot of people have a problem with. i also checked out some other sites

so what can i do?
is it worth giving OC a bell and ask if i can get it swapped?
can it be made quiet with a bit of tinkering?
i saw someones comment on a thread here that chances of a loud PSU noise can be a bit hit and miss?

any help would be sweet as a nut!
cheers

edit: oh yeah, what do you think about my specs? i'm using my set up for gaming and work with Pshop, 3dmax and Zbrush.

Hard to do that unless fan is bad one. (lower speed fan can cause heating)

Sure there's some variance between individuals (strong punch during transport coudldamge fan bearing) but there are differences which show in outlook.
8cm fan needs much higher RPM than 12cm fan for moving same amount of air, also higher frequency noise of faster fan means human ear is more sensitive to it.
Then there are differences between manufacturers, most care quite little about noise but especially Seasonic is well known from quiet (and reliable) PSUs.

see, i dont want to have to buy a whole new PSU, since this one is totally new, and supposed to be quite decent.
maybe i didnt look into PSUs enough when i was considering purchase.

my mate got a new pc same time as me. he got the 750w Corsair and says its really quiet.

i tried an experiment by halting the fan on startup, but that lasts half a second until the computer say "no no no, i'm not starting".

Baws..if i could even sell this PSU i have to get a more quiet one, i;d do that, but who would want to buy something with that amount of noise..

oh the horror...

well if its still under 28 days u should be able to return if as its not up to ** expectations as its loud as fu... as you put it :p then get a nice quiet one :)

TX750 is made by CWT so no Seasonic's excellent fan controller or knowledge for building quiet PSUs. (unlike in TX650)

Even one Finnish PC magazine whose reviews aren't generally ranked very high found that PSU noisy...
which fits very well to its very high speed 2800rpm fan, baffle blocking half of fan and high airflow impedance heatsink desing:

Most people just keep even above 1500rpm fans and hard mounted HDDs as quiet so they saying something as quiet doesn't mean anything.

If you've had it under 7 days simply return it under the Distance Selling Act. However if you call OCUK they will likely swap it out for another one... I reccommend a Corsair HX. :)

i just got of the phone to a chap from Overclockers. I explained my senario, and he want off to talk to a Tech guy.
He did admit that the ProXStream is a louder than average PSU.

i'm returning it and getting refunded the price of the psu, and i'm going to buy something else.
the guy on the phone mentioned the corsair tx750

Richdog - the Corsair HX is 620w. would that be enough to run all my components?

cheers for your advice so far lads

Even VX450 would be enough.
8800GT is ~80W so two of them makes 160W, then 80W for Kentsfield Q6600 and with plentily left for others we would have 300W peak draw.
So something from around 500W would be enough, 700W would be already at limit where idle/light use efficiency of PSU would start to suffer considerably.

Corsair HX, Enermax Modu and Seasonic M12 are all proven quiet modular PSUs, for fixed cable PSU just look for something in this list:

Corsair VX650, TX750 and HX1000 are made by CWT so I wouldn't trust any of them to be quiet.

I went with the HX620w which i will receive on monday and do the swap with the delivery man.
looking forward to it, and i'll keep you updated.

thanks again for everybodys help

Be quiet! Dark Power Pro 650W PSU that i have got si so quiet i thought it wasnt working. i thought fan wasnt spinning at all, but it ise, and is EXTREMELY quiet. i cant recommend this PSU enough
