First 600CC Bike recomendations

As a first bike I think 400's are very nice, they're cheaper to buy (nice NC30 will set you back £1000-1500), and cheaper to insure, whilst providing good handling and plenty of speed,

While the NC30 is a lovely bike, the handling great, it's small, getting quite long in the tooth, highly impractical and going to require significantly more money spent on it sooner rather than later. You'll also be VERY lucky to find one that hasn't been ragged to death on the track/crashed. For someone who's just passed his test is this your best option ?

Oh and the small zorst on the newer Hornets is a nod to the GP growlers :)

Small yes, but depends how tall he is, i'm 5'8 and I can do 180 miles on it without a problem (one stop to fill up and that's it),

Age, yeah again, but as long as you get a clean example I don't think this is overly an issue, neither is the being 'ragged' around a track, as long as it's been well maintained they seem fine. People on 400gb have models running 60k+ miles with original engines, mine's on ~24k miles now and runs perfectly, albeit needs an mot now,

Surely no more impracticle than any other sports bike, other than size which I mentioned above,

Best option? depends on his budget and what's available really, I'd take the NC30 over quite a few newer bikes, especially those bikes in the £1000-1500 region, definately something to consider at least...

GSXR 600 SRAD. Sportsbike looks, Sportsbike performance, Commuter style comfort. Good reliablity, cheap parts, lots of em around at a decent price, what more could you want?! I had one as my first big bike and I was going from an Aprillia RS50, so long as you're sensible you'll be fine!

Sports 600s have 3 big drawbacks for new riders- and if you've just passed DAS and have no 125 history you can barely ride a bike... First is that they're very, very powerful- people with no bike background think a 600 is going to be slow, yeah right. Sure, you can be sensible but it doesn't take much of an error to spin up the back wheel and crash, or to catapult yourself into the side of a car, or similiar. Top speed isn't the issue, since even an SV650 can do 130, but 600 power can get you in trouble very fast.

Second is the brakes... They all have phenomenal brakes these days. And a new rider has no braking ability. The panic "grab a handful" reaction can get even very experienced riders but it's much worse for a noob, and with these brakes you just can't do that.

Third, is the cost- most people will drop their bike in some way in the first year, whether it's a real crash or a car park drop off the sidestand. And a CBR600RR is a very expensive bike to drop.

My advice isn't exactly unique, but... Honda Hornet, Suzuki SV650, or older CBR600F. All 3 bikes are FAR better than you will be, even once you get some miles under you, fast enough to scare you senseless, but more forgiving, and cheap and tough. The SV in particular is almost unkillable, trust me I tried. And very, very few people have the capacity to outride these bikes capabilities on the road without taking stupid risks.

all the big bases have been covered save this;

how competant a mechanic are you?

Bikes like love and do need a little more maintenance than cars.

A naked bike is that much more accessible and might encourage a newer rider to check things over properly.

Also, when you drop your bike, you wont need to buy the most expensive plastic in the world to make it look pretty again

edit- sound advice from above. you wont outride a hornet/fazer/sv650 in your first year. Especially not on the road.

Looking back when I first passed my test, I dont think I would had wanted a new 600cc sports bike. You make so many little mistakes which can be a lot worse on something a little less forgiving, I am very level headed and never pushed anything until I was comfortable and I am sure I could had went straight to a 600 and be ok but I am happy I went up the ranks slowly, I fell like I got the most out of each class and helped me to be a better smoother rider.

Even today when I go from my 1000cc sports bike onto the wifes 03 636, I am amazed just how fast 600's are, just how well the brake, just how well they handle. Not something for a novice imo.

It's still your choice, if you are at that age where you can get whatever you want then get one, no-one wants to be older and stuck on a 125 or 400 etc. Just take your time, its not a race to be the bestest fastest rider, get a year under your belt then do a trackday.

Personally I wouldn't bother with 400's anymore. Ok you've got two main choices, the NC30 and ZXR400. But most of them are so long in the tooth now and if you get the Kawa it WILL break :(. Just go for a slightly older 600 before they all went mental. So CBR600F, GSXR 600 SRAD etc etc. Just make sure you're sensible and don't ride like a donk!

I just got my first bike yesterday, its a 02 Suzuki GSXR 600 with a Yoshimuru exhaust system.

I really like it so far and it sounds good, also 48mpg = :D

48mpg ? Try riding above 30mph (speed limits permitting) and using the rev range above 4,000, it's so much more fun :)

No it's not a good recomendation. He is currently doing his DAS which means he will carry out his test on a big bike. A CG125 can only crack 60mph with the wind behind you, it is no more safe than a big bike with a sensible rider.

CG125 60mph with wind behind you? What planet do you live on?

I only ride around campus and back and there is a 25mph limit so rarely actually make it above 10mph with usually heavy pedestrian traffic so.....:p

Quite a common site in America. It's his life and I'm sure he is aware of the dangers. I found the horrifically lowered sports bike more offensive than the lack of gear :p

Oh im quite aware of the way they do it over there ..And seen the vids and pics of the injurys... But since were on a UK forum i can moan all i want :)

Nothing annoys me more than flagrant disregard and lack of common sence to riding bikes .

thats abit harsh... like he said he usually riding around campus.

imo it's up to the rider how he dresses.. I chuckle to myself when I see a dude go past at 100mph in a tshirt but it's up to him, and no less a 'biker' than you, me or the next guy

this summer I couldn't be arsed wearing full leathers to work as had to swim early each morning so just commuted 7miles in jeans. maybe someone else spotted me and thought 'huh, he's no biker like that'... though in reality I was prolly more biker than him, as I ride rain or shine and all through winter. (not that it matters)
