Hi i went in a computer shop near me and they had an AOP 22" monitor. i've checked their website and it says that its got a 3000:1 contrast ratio. i was intending on getting the Samsung SM-2253LW Aqua 21.6" which has a 8000:1 contrast ratio. i'm guessing higher numbers = better but could somebody explain this contrast ratio malarky to me and explain why the samsung is probably a better buy. thanks

Samsung use dynamic which throws the number out of the window. Dynamic is vile. I have a Samsung PC monitor I don't use dynamic preset either (and have owned Samsung LCD TV and Plasma again not used dynamic)

No, higher contrast ratio isn't better, it's a ruse to fool you. These "x000:1" contrast ratios are nothing short of dishonest as they are achieved through "dynamic contrast ratio" which is where they change the brightness of the backlight on the whole screen. Net effect is that it looks rubbish and you'll be turning it off.

Just because a spec sheet has a bigger/better number doesn't mean the monitor is any good, normally the exact opposite.

About the best you'll ever get from an LCD in reality is about 1000:1 (static that is), maybe 1200:1. They just let too much light through to do any better. Dynamic contrast means the black and white measurements were taken at different times with different screen content, so when they measure black, the screen detects a black screen and dims the backlight to minimum. So it's a bit of a con. It does get you a better black depth, but they have to amplify the signal to then get the rest of the picture bright enough when the backlight is dimmed, and this leads to some nasty problems.

We have dynamic contrast on our Samsung LCDTV and had to turn it off - it was bringing out all kinds of horrible hues on compressed media. It completely ruined the Moria sequence in LOTR. Honestly it's worse than having poor black depth.

The big numbers sell more screens though.

Also it makes brightness pump up and down:

That game does some effect like dark edges but that monitor uses dynamic fraud and end results is fully fitting to brightness being pumped up and down:

what do people i think i should go for then. a £149 22" AOP monitor or the Samsung SM-2253LW Aqua 21.6". i would go on their website and find all its specs but for some reason i can't find the website anymore, nor is it in my history.

There are higher contrast panels like the Samsung LTI460A-A03 which has CR of 2000:1, but they are expensive and normally only used for digital signage.

i have terrible backlight bleed around the edges of my samsung 2232BW, this is "common" in the samsung range supposedly. apart from that its a decent monitor.

Whole shipload of BS!
If TN were CRT it would have been taken from end of production line straight to waste dump because of having been considered faulty.

This is what kind viewing angle/image quality TN has: From down angle colours "black out", from up angle black turns grey. So you either got darker upper edge or lower edge without black.

Sure makes great picture quality!

And not even any digital input connector!
Yes, good Post-it holder, paperweight or maybe even display if you don't want/need any kind (colour) accuracy.
