Hey guys,

My motherboards an MSi 975X Platinum power up edition - will a Q9450 work on it? Will it run effectively or do you guys recommend an upgrade? What about the ram in my sig, would that need upgrading? Any bottlenecks? :)

I'm also currently using an Asus Silent Square Pro - will that be enough to keep it cool? (no overclocking)

Thanks!

MSI say no it won't work (they list all 1333mhz FSB chips as being incompatible). Tho you can search the net to say if anyone has actually tried it.

Any of the P45 based boards (such as the ASUS P5Q range) would be suitable for a Q9450. Your memory will be grand (tho you do tend to need memory that will do atleast 900mhz if you're intending to overclock the Q9450 far).

Have you bought the Q9450 yet, as the Q9550 is the same price atm.

Thanks for the quick reply, I haven't bought one yet but I'll let a Q9550 if its the same price :) My only question really is about the ram, I wont be doing any overclocking but would you consider it a low speed? Will it have an effect upon my system performance? Most people I see with 4 gigs generally have faster ram!

I might have to get a new board first then - do you know the difference between this:

and this:

other than the wifi? Thanks!

The RAM will be more than enough if not overclocking (the Q9550 only really needs PC2-5300 if not overclocking).

The latter of the 2 boards is DDR3. But tbh if you're not overclocking then one of the cheaper P5Q's (-E or Pro) would do the job unless the Deluxe has a feature you need.

Thanks for the info :) I'll probably have to get the components one by one but its a start!
