I just got a letter from Companies House and I have to submit annual return for Ltd company.

The company is dormant, there has never been a penny in/out of the account and no transactions have been done.

Would this be a fairly straight forward procedure, or would it be best to get an accountant to take care of it?

Never had to do this before :o

Yes, you have to file an annual return.

Info here.

Have you received a form 363 from Companies House? If so you should be able to check the information, make any necessary amendments (there shouldn't be many in your case) and send it back with a cheque for £30.

You can also do all this online via their WebFiling service, in which case you only have to pay £15.

More info here: http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/layer?topicId=1073869071

EDIT: you will also need to submit abbreviated accounts (albeit blank) and you should be able to find a template for such on the link that vonhelmet provided above. An accountant can be useful here, and once you've seen how they do it (assuming your company remains dormant) then you can follow the process for subsequent returns.

You need to send a nil return. Basically, a CT6000 with zeros. Then write them a letter informing them the company is dormant and will remain dormant for future periods. Ask them to confirm you don't need to send returns for future periods. That's what we do when a client goes dormant anyway.

Either way ring HMRC and ask.
