I'm not meaning in the basic sense of "are these good", let me clarify.

How do you regard Patek watches, as engineering examples, and although expensive, are they considered to be a desirable brand, are they a brand you aspire to own at any point?

The reason i ask is that i hear the name very little, and no-one i speak to has heard of them, yet my dad and his circle of friends seem to rave about them, infact so much so that a couple of examples stand pride of place in his small watch collection.

Boring thread to most but it would interest me as to what other watch enthusiasts think :)

I've heard of Patek and I know that they're supposed to be very expensive. They don't seem to be very good looking though IMO.

Patek Philippe are about as good as it gets when it comes to watches. They're often considered the best of top manufacturers. I'm talking about A. Lange & Sohne, Vacheron et Constantine, Jaeger LeCoultre and Breguet.

I prefer their dress watches (the ones with complications) to the likes of the Aquanaut and Nautilus. If i had the means, i'd certainly buy one.

I love the Patek 5131J world time watch with the cloisonne enamel dial. Beautiful watch but I think my budget will not run to it. Saving for a Panerai in these credit-crunch times, might get a bargain;).

Patek are the rolls royce of watches imo.The grand complication watches are on my shopping list when i win the lottery :D

Patek are considered to be up there with the very best, one of the "Big 5" of top end watchmaking

The styling isn't to my taste but the quality and workmanship is awesome

I can understand your Dad and his friends as being typical Patek buyers, the stereotype would be suit wearing businessmen who feel they have nothing to prove, they do tend to appeal to older folks though due to their understated styling

What would you say "The big 5" currently are?

Interesting to hear that patek are considered to be genuinely excellent, rather than simply overpriced versions of lesser watches. Why is it do you think that no-one has generally heard of the brand?

The semi sports models as you say just don't seem to sit right, as a dress watch a simple Calatrava takes some beating

Of the brands you listed I think Breguet and perhaps a bit out of their depth amongst the others

Most people seem to consider the 5 top watchmakers ( in no order ) as

Audemars Piguet
Vacheron Constantin
Jaeger LeCoultre
Patek Phillipe
A.Lange & Sohne

Big 5 as above

TBH I would say that anyone with the slightest interest in watches would know of Patek

By not heard of, i mean in comparison with cheaper brands such as Rolex and Omega. I guess this is quite a specialist market.

Thanks for the insight. :)

Rolex and Omega are probably in the 2nd tier of watchmaking ( still both very good ) but are top notch in terms of marketing and brand awareness

Totally hijacking the thread (albeit temporarily I hope!)

Can you recommend anywhere to get an Omega restored Rotty? I have been offered a vintage Seamaster by my grandad but it is in a bit of a sorry state- the day/date does not set and the bracelet is quite tarnished. It is an all gold model.

Ideally in Liverpool! Would Goldsmiths/ David M Robinsons be worth going to?

Got some links I can post when I am back on my main PC

don't think they are local to you but they are good and will deal by post

Well I got quoted a minimum of £360 for repairs to the Omega in Goldsmiths. And promptly got offered 12 months interest free credit on anything over £500.

They also said they would do discount for cash on anything but the full stainless steel Rolex :D

I spent a while going through the Patek site and decided I like the 5078P the most, googled the price and looked like this
