He's watched episode 1 (season 1) and thinks the acting is wooden and the production is low budget!

To me the acting is awesome and the show looks great on screen.

What do the OcUK gang think? :)

I have to agree that the production *looks* low budget, but then I think that was done on purpose, and it adds to the effect. Especially as one of the key focus' of the wire is the poverty in the area.

Your friend knows nothing.
Its a HBO production, it probably costs more per episode than most films. (exaggeration)

I really didn't start enjoying the show until i'd seen a few episodes, you certainly can't just judge it on that first episode.

First episode in any show is a pilot. Usually made on a budget as a one off to try and get a contract with a tv company. The actors haven't got to grips with their characters yet, your friend is quite silly if he is judging the whole show on the very first episode.

The Wire is absolutely top notch, alongside the Sopranos in my view.

It's such a shame that the final episode of sopranos didn't have the sheer emotional impact of the final episode of the wire...for me wire is a far superior show in every respect.

And yes, you're friend is a dumbass...the wire is excellent...followed closely by the shield.

The Wire- possibly the best scripted and acted series ever on TV.

I come to this conclusion after only discovering the series 1 month ago and watching all 5 series in the past 4 weeks.

People talk about spin off series for characters from other programs but with The Wire you could pretty much base a new series around any of the fully developed characters.

I keep hearing the Wire is one of the best shows ever, but although I'm about 4 or 5 episodes into the first season I still can't get into it.

What's supposed to be so good about it?

Took me about five episodes to properly get into it....it unravels itself slowly. If you aren't gripped by the end of the first season YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

agreed, also like someone else pointed out, i think its made to look low budget, but the acting is great in it IMO

Try to keep going, it builds up slowly as the characters and scenes are introduced, iirc by episode 5 you're still only just getting to the barn becoming operational and the main characters fully introduced.

You don't get into the real meat of the series until a bit later

In fairness, in the first episode or two, it does looks pretty shoddy (there's an awful camera zoom that always bugged me in episode 2, and the angles are just generally off for the first few eps), and McNulty's accent is terrible in places for the first season. And Daniels seems like an incredibly stiff actor but is in fact an incredibly stiff character.

I only just started watching it again recently (am actually about to put episode nine on right now), and it is a bit ropey in places, I'll admit. But it still becomes fantastic, and as Carzy said, if you don't like it by the end of the first season (come on it's only 13 episodes), you're wrong in the head.

Mind you, I'm not sure I get how anyone can watch through the chess scene ("This the queen. She smart, she fierce") and not be getting it, but I guess it's still early days. I mean, hell, barely any Bubbles, or Omar, or Stringer Bell yet? Or McNulty and Bunk getting drunk together? That be the good stuff right there.

EDIT: Let me put it this way. There seem to be several people who have given up after the first few episodes. But on the other hand, I've never seen anyone go "Yeah I watched the Wire to the end, it was ok, but not great." Everyone who's seen it all thinks it's one of, if not THE best show on TV, by far. Have some perseverance, people.

Some of these new US shows have great pilots, and big budgets too, 90210's pilot looks awesome.
