To our Muslim friends on here I have a question.

I was out with the other half last night at my favourite curry house and I was speaking to one of the waiters who generally comes over for a bit of crack, top lad.

He was telling me that he is on his fast in line with his religious beliefs and will not even drink water during the relevant times.

Question is, how do you do that and not keel over ? Surely to not drink water can leave you dangerously dehydrated ?

Here's me tucking into chicken tikka and chateau Kingfisher and I must say I felt a pang of guilt when he was telling me about it.

I personally admire his willpower.

thought it was just during daylight hours, so once dark he can drink

I generally go from when I go to bed till about 7pm the next day before I have a drink, not planned and probably not the best thing to do but it's just not something I think about during the day

It is their own choice to fast though, no need to feel guilty about something that really is completely unnecessary in the grand scheme of things (IMHO).

Although I do feel bad for one of my friends, he's a Muslim and currently on holiday in NZ. Imagine being on holiday and not being able to eat!

You have converted Rotty ?

The last time I say you in Nottingham you were winkered on lager. ;)

Can you take appetite suppresants before sunrise? Or is that cheating?

E.G. if I take an ECA pill it kills my appetite and I don't feel dehyrated (although you're meant to drink more water!)

From a young age Muslims are encouraged to be more efficient with food, by thinking less. Asking questions takes mental energy, energy that would usually be supplied by food. This is double so for Muslim women, who are known as the camels of the Muslim community - lacking education or status within the community they can go without food or water for weeks.

I think there is something Islam can teach us all about efficiency.

Next time you're hungry, RamaDONT ram it down your throat.

A mate of mine is a diabetic muslim, which I was curious about- I saw him eating during ramadan and asked how it works. "Well, if you've got a medical need, instead of fasting you make an offering of rice at the mosque". Result! With that and the free prescriptions, diabetes is really looking up.

why bother? not eating for 12 or so hours isn't very difficult

Have you never got to the end of the day without having a drink? It's really not difficult at all.
