8800 GTX... SLI or ATi?

Simple question, I have an 8800 GTX but with lots of new games coming out with new fangled graphics (Daddy, what’s a god ray?) I am thinking about an upgrade.

Now I already have a SLI capable motherboard and PSU, so I am thinking about getting another GTX. Is this a wise choice? Can I get better for cheaper? (Ive only got around £80-£100 btw)

Sorry if it’s a bone question but I have been out of the loop for a while.

Try and pick up a second hand 8800 GTX for £60 ish quid, then wait it out until the next round of cards.

/spanner in the works.

Another option is you buy a 4850 now, and sell the 8800 GTX :p

It will produce less heat and less headaches (for example if a game doesn't support SLI - which to be fair most modern games do now, but still).

Does the 4850 compare well with two 8800 GTX's when SLI does work?

(I assume it kicks bottom vs. just one 8800 GTX)

Yep 2 x 8800GTX's is still a beast of of a setup, beats any single card apart from the 4870X2 I'd expect in most games. (SLI dependent, natch)

I vote for 8800GTX SLI if you can find one for under £100 - they will kick a single 4850's ass in pretty much all recent titles. The only downside is the higher power usage and heat output.

Contrary to what some people might say - SLI shows decent gains even at 1280x res... well atleast upto the 8 series SLI - I've not had a play with a 280GTX SLI yet.

Only game I've had problems with SLI recently was mass effect - everything else has run really well.

If a game for example cant use SLI, does it simply not use the second card, or would I need to physically disable it in a control panel before I start said game?

It just does not use the second card, you dont have to go disabling things.

for your budget, and the fact you have a SLI ready motherboard, SLI GTX's would be an aswum set-up.

how-ever, be aware that these will requiire a decent PSU, what psu do you currently hace?
