Does the xfire overlay work on steam games?

Very simple question that I simply cant find the answer to!

The xfire overlay will work for every game that I own - except for team fortress 2.

Normally a box comes up saying xfire has been enabled ingame but it never does it for team fortress 2. Can someone tell me why?

Sometimes Xfire just decides not to work, is it doing it regularly?

Steam is infinitely better than xfire in Steam games, and still better when it comes to communication with non steam games. Do you really need it?

Yeah its in the games list, it knows when I play the game as my status changes to TF2 but I've never ever ever had it work in TF2. I prefer to use xfire aswell as steam as I use its voice chat feature, and its a pita having to alt tab out of the game.

Can anyone tell me why it isnt working as it should?

I've never heard of it doing that, perhaps reinstall? Do they have xfire support forums?

By the way, Steam also has better voices coms than xfire :p

I'll try a reinstall, I was just looking for help on here as I'm sick of using support sites - if its any help, it does it on my mates pc too so its not just mine :(

i see xfire as a sort of 'last.fm' for my games - if steam did a game tracking thing so i could put my profile on myspace etc then i wouldnt use xfire

also - steam has a nasty habit of losing my fave servers where as xfire doesnt

Oh, it's probably just being funny with TF2 in general.

If you have the newer xfire skin try reverting to the older one and give that a whirl (or visa versa). They both do things quite differently, I had some quirky issues related to themes ages ago.

Or just use steam :p

Hmm well I reinstalled and it hasn't helped - I would use steam, I know I keep being told its better but I want xfire to work too! I have friends that keep in contact with me through Xfire and its really annoying coming off the game to see a load of chat windows waiting for me!

Hang on, I'll see if it cocks up for me.

edit: Fine here. The settings in your screenie look fine too. You're going to have to take this up with Xfire team I'm afraid. While you're at it, tell them to design a UI that isn't hideous, and an experience that isn't remarkably buggy.

Will do - I'm annoyed! Thanks for the help anyway mate

Just found THIS - Lyon are you running XP or vista? Becuase TF2 is in that list!

EDIT! - Got it working, if anyone has the same problems as me and are running vista:

locate to C:\Program Data\Xfire
open xfire_games.ini in notepad
find or search for "team fortress 2"
remove the text that displays "DISABLED_FOR_VISTA"
save changes, exit - works :D

Takes a few seconds for the xfire box to pop up in the game for the first time but after that its fine

Doh, that looks like your answer. I'm on XP. I have Vista on dual boot, I would offer to try it, but that is most certainly the issue.

Now you have no choice but to use Steam!

I know people get stuck in their ways, it took me ages of nagging to get most of my mates to use Steam for communications, everyone is happier for it now though. You could even start a group and use the chat system in there for easy dropping in and out of voip.

Edit: Guess not :p

Call me daft, but isn't it sort of pointless having chat windows flashing up if you're in the middle of a game?

It is disabled for vista due to some noobs having performance issues with steam&xfire in vista.

Go to :
C:\ProgramData\Xfire
open xfire_games.ini with notepad
Search for team fortress 2.
Remove ''|DISABLE_FOR_VISTA'' from the bottom line ( orginal looks like
Code:
InGameFlags=USE_PRESENT|ENABLE_MOUSE|USE_DINPUT_MOUSE|DISABLE_RELEASE|REINSTALL_KEYBOARD_HOOK|DISABLE_FOR_VISTA
).
(so it'll look like this:

Code:
[5134]
LongName=Team Fortress 2
ShortName=tf2
LauncherDirKey=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam\InstallPath
LauncherExe=steam.exe
DetectExe=SteamApps\*\team fortress 2\hl2.exe
LauncherPasswordArgs=+password %UA_GAME_HOST_PASSWORD%
LauncherNetworkArgs=
_LAUNCHER_PASSWORD_ARGS% +connect
_GAME_HOST_NAME%:
_GAME_HOST_PORT%
Launch=
_LAUNCHER_EXE_PATH% -applaunch 440 -novid
_LAUNCHER_EXTRA_ARGS%
_LAUNCHER_NETWORK_ARGS%
ServerStatusType=SOURCE
ServerEncodingType=UTF8
InGameRenderer=D3D9
InGameFlags=USE_PRESENT|ENABLE_MOUSE|USE_DINPUT_MOUSE|DISABLE_RELEASE|REINSTALL_KEYBOARD_HOOK
)

Save the file.
And it works perfectly...

Have to repeat the process unfortunately every time xfire updates itself or the game list.

Edit: whoops seems I've been beaten.

Or just use steam

Hate steam interface, has less features and in vista x64, I get more crashes with steam.exe and none with xfire64.exe...
I just miss launching games or browsing servers for all games from 1 window ( xfire in this case), I miss the FPS counter, I miss the in game screenshots ( yes I know most games have their own button, but it's easier to have it all in 1 without having to go to the options to change the key or browse 20 different screenshots folders... Also very easy 1 click uploader which uploads your pics to the xfire server, much faster than messing with imageshack or even skydrive... Also video recording and in game chatting in all games unlike with just a few non steam games and only steam games for the rest... For some older games like mohaa you have stats recording which is very nice. And I'm a stats whore I love seeing how much I've played a game and what games I've played, last time I checked steam forgets things older than 2 weeks...

I just like the app more than stuff like Fraps + imagehost + ingame options + steam + gamestats + playing stats, it's just so much in 1...

Yes those kinds of features are the only reason I keep hold on xfire. Steam chat is available across all games though, including VOIP, not just Steam games. Adding non steam games gives you the option to launch all your games under one program. Luckily xfire launches with games automatically (that is if it has decided to work, which it often doesn't want to do with me) so you can have both.

From a design point of view, Steam is much more proffetional. It is designed to work effortlessley. Nothing is of any hassle. I tried to use VOIP in xfire for the first time a few weeks ago, I heard it ringing so went into the UI and had no idea how to answer. The guy on the other end didn't know what I was supposed to do either.

Steam looks better too, subjective I know, but I have an eye for design. Nothign feels cluttered, colours and shading are minimal to avoid confusion. Steam has better friend managment, it's much easier to distinguish between different people and perform actions, like invite to group while in game for example. When I used to talk to people in xfire, if I had a couple of chats going it just wasn't very managable talking to numerous peope at once.

Xfire does have stats for a very select number of games, but Steam also has stats for all their latest releases.

Like you I still use Steam for its features that Steam lacks, like screenshots, but cannot stand using it for communication.

Personally I don't really have an option anyway, I have a horrible xfire bug where anything I type is also pressed in game. So in COD if I type a sentance with G in it, I will throw a grenade! If T is in my sentance I will start typing in game chat as well. Can't be bothered with it.
