Tell me about the MK1 Leons. Im going to be purchasing my 2nd car and im after one of the 110 TDI Leons. What are the main things to look for on these? Any major common problems?

Insurance came out cheaper for me than the 1.6 and Better MPG mainly. Amongst other things.

A 2002/52 Seat Leon 1.6 with say 70k will be cheaper than a 2002/52 Leon 1.9 TD 110 with 70k on it. The mpg wont pay for the saving unless you do big miles.

Depends on what you want it to do. I only know the lump from the golfs but it's almost identical. It was electronically limited to 118mph BUT would remap from 110bhp to 140bhp+. I can't remember what the unrestricted top end was but as a cheap tool to go point a to point b cruising about it's not bad if you do the miles to warrant it. If you don't then go petrol. I found the advantage kicked in about 15k but it depends on a fair few variables. Clutch/DMF issues weren't that common but check out honest john :)

I'm sure Mondeo love will errupt all over this thread at any moment so i'll back away slowly :D

That, and the 110 is slow :(

Much nicer to drive than the 1.6 though. The 1.8 20v would be the best compromise for a petrol. Don't even bother with the 1.6.

If I had to choose between the TDi and the 1.6, it would be the diesel because even though it is actually quite slow, it feels decent enough to drive.

118mph top speed sounds about right for a standard golf diesel flat out. Why on earth would they electronically limit it to 118mph when it would struggle to hit 120 anyway?

The cloud of soot following behind it?

Dirty smelly sooty non-DPF diesel = more soot than factory chinmey.

would remap from 110bhp to 140bhp+.

Which is likely to cause overfuelling and almost certainly even more soot. These old diesels are nothing more than filthy, cancer causing, bronchitis inducing disgusting cars that should be banned from the road or taxed to high heaven. Tax based on CO2 only? Don't make me laugh. Tax the idiots who belch fumes from the back of their cars.

Watch for leaky door seals. Water can aslo leak in through the bulk head and pollen filter iirc.

Check the footwells for dampness. If it's been a problem for a while and left unchecked you'll be able to smell it when you open the car :)

I had a Leon TDI 130 for 3 years, that was a really nice car, I really don't have anything bad to say about it. The 130 was quite a bit quicker than the 110, it was one of the VAG PD units so although the horsepower was only 20 higher the torque was quite a lot higher, it pulled very well indeed. It was a nice car to drive, comfortable too. Also, it would easily do over 50mpg on a run.

Have got a 53 plate MK1 Cupra R, love it to bits, but not overly impressed with the build quality.
Beware of the paint, it chips VERY easily as i have found out :(

Great cars though in general in my opinion.

I love motors, if it's diesel and/or a car that isn't considered desirable (read BMW/Ford) it's acceptable to troll :)

The 110's torque was a little low compared to the 130 but the 130 was a PD engine the 110 wasn't. Torque still went from 230nm to 290nm following nothing more than a remap so from a driving pov if you take everything else as being equal the 110 remapped gave more bhp but less torque than the PD130.

For (mostly) factual info have a look at Honest John's it covers items to check, recalls and reported issues.

Not a lot of stuff on the internet bothers me but jesus christ this is beginning to grate. Have you no concept of the ridiculous irony of the word 'bmw' turning more search results of people like you posting that OVER AND OVER AGAIN than actual threads recommending them?

Surpirised you'd let it bother you at all, much less bother to search for 'BMW' regularly on here. If you like yours and other owners like the examples they have then who cares what I or anyone else says ? That is unless you need internet love ?

Want a hug ?

There is little I could care less about than whether you like my car - thats not my gripe. You are more than entitled to hate it, infact, I welcome negative comments on the rare occasions i post a thread about it - thats what discussion forums are for.

The irritating annoying thing is that most threads go the same way. Somebody posts a thread, some people offer some advice, a wiseguy like you comes along and goes IF IT ISNT A BMW ON THIS FORUM ITS CRAP, some others take the bait and we end up with a pointless flame war that goes nowhere and leaves the OP scratching his head and wondering what he got himself into.

It would be half excusable if it was actually true but it isn't! Look at my post in this thread. It simply differentiates between two Seat Leons. There is no BMW recommendation. The word Mondeo is not present. Yet still you persist with your garbage.
