My new weight-loss diary. (Now with pics!)

I agree, he will lose a lot of natural muscle mass (he will need to to hit 12 stone), so when the weight is lost the skin will still look flabby - skinny fat (is that the right term?)

Yeah, that's what I've always seen it called. So, while he will look thinner, he will still not look thin, but you can't resistance train on such a low amount of cals so there's no choice but to get to that stage.

I think that having a low cal diet (about ~1200 cals I would go for) and then factor in some weights so that when the weight comes off some muscle remains would be better.

I do wish him all the best though!

About 2 years ago, I was 14 stone (5ft 9). This was mainly down to being ill (depression). Eating late at night was the killer for me. I am now 11 stone. I hit the gym at least 3 times a week which made the biggest difference, togther with an average diet (no junk food, sweets, chocolate, fizzy drinks etc). I mostly eat chicken and tuna, great for building muscle.

You will get there. Believe it or not, it actually gets easier as time goes on. :)

My old man did the lighter life diet and I have to say it worked incredibly well for him, I think about 5 stone in the end. With that level of calorie restriction you will definitely lose weight and lose it quite quickly, but it's not for the faint hearted.

The main thing though that he found helpful was the counselling sessions. He found it incredibly helpful to look at why he had been eating too much for too long, and working on strategies to combat such eating in the future. The extreme diet approach seemed to help him by seeing results fast, but he felt the counselling was what allowed him to be long term better with his eating.

Best of luck

I've always been skinny, but I'd just like to add my voice to those saying this diet sounds like it could be a disaster. It's brilliant that you want to lose the weight, but there IS a better way of doing it:

cut out junk/unhealthy food/beer entirely
replace it with healthy alternatives
eat 300-500 calories less per day
eat more fruit and vegetables
exercise lots more

This will be:

cheaper
FAR better for you

You'll feel better, look better, and be able to eat things.

And if you succeed in changing your life like this, the weight will stay off, instead of ballooning back up as soon as the diet is finished. Additionally, you'd get some muscle out of it, and strengthen your heart/lungs.

Your doctor would be able to help with implementing this kind of diet, or any nutritionist. As said above, counselling might also be good in looking at why you've put on the weight before. But eating 1/5 of your RDA of calories sounds like a recipe for pain.

Good luck with whatever you decide on.

no its not. its a shake / powder based diet. just like the vdiet.

by that theory, eating only macdonalds milkshakes, 18 a day would be identical aswell. Its whats IN the shakes that matters, the fact that its a shake makes no difference to whats in it or what it will cause the body to do.

The vdiet is supposed to be around 500-1000 calories less than maintainance, so 1000-1500 more than this one, its next to no carb, 150grams protein ish and 75-125grams of fat. Its completely and utterly different and theres no comparison between the state and method by which your body will work under the two completely different types of diet.

It's nice to see everyones opinions. Although none of you will change my mind :p I've done a lot more research than you folks (understandably!) and know exactly what i'm in for and what to expect. It's not dangerous, my GP just signed all my paperwork and did my medical and told me how successful patients have been on the programme. It's the combination of a Very Low Calorie Diet, combined with Counselling (CBT and Transactional Analysis) combined with a programme designed to get you eating properly at the end of it.

Thanks to all those that have wished me luck, please feel free to follow the blog :):):)

EDIT: Interestingly, here is a simulation of the weight I knocked up through some shopping website...

Mate, I know that's a simulation, but you will not look like that at the end.

As your post says, you 'know a lot more than us folks' so all the best!

However, it is dangerous (how you can convince yourself that a diet which requires GP checkups and counselling isn't dangerous is beyond me). You also don't know what you're in for, as you haven't done it before, and furthermore the people who you 'know more than' may just surprise you with their knowledge on diets.

End of rant. Well done on taking steps to changing your life.

jesus. i know what the vdiet is. you dont need to tell me that.

what i said is true. thats all that matters. i said it in reply to the 'balanced diet' comment.

Best of luck to you.

I've lost a lot of weight this year thru a complete lifestyle change and hitting the gym hard, and am starting to feel great with loads more confidence. Went to a mate's wedding on Friday and saw people who I hadn't seen in months and got nothing but compliments all night. :D

Although this wouldn't be the method for me, I hope it works well for you, you achieve your weight goal and stay there.

Being harsh - it sounds like a barrel full of gimmicks that avoid the real problem.

You don't need an extreme diet, special food packs, and a councilor.

Read up on nutrition/metabolism, commit yourself to a plan of your own, and do it properly.

Good luck with this, it is hard, but if you can get your head around why you were overeating in the first place and stop doing so, it's a good thing. I know a few people who have done lighter life, and imo the people who fail are the ones who don't take the CBT seriously.

DO NOT DO LIGHTER LIFE. My wife spent an absolute fortune doing it, lost a pile of fat and then put it back on in the twinkling of a pastie. ( and she took the CBT seriously)

what a completely ridiculous post.

lets go over your post. don't do it, it worked great she lost a pile of weight, then she overate and put it back on. To be fair, the last part isn't anything to do with them, the bit thats them, is that bit where she lost loads of weight.

People who blame faddy diets(which in general isn't the best way but do tend to work) for working, but not stopping them overeating afterwards do my head in. IT clearly works, most diets do infact work, your weight shooting back up is assuming you can eat exactly the same as you did before you lost the weight. If you take no responsibility in doing research, finding some very basic info and eating healthily once you get down to the weight you wanted, then you also have no right to complain about a diet.

I wish you very good luck!

It will be interesting to compare each other (so to speak). I got on the scales today at 18 stone, BMI of 36 but I'm going to try and slim down on me tod - eat healthier, do more physical activity. The number of steps I did today was about 4,000 so each week I'll bump that up by 20% until I get to about 10,000 and then start off with a bit of jogging/walking.

My diet at the moment is just non-existant, it's all cake, biscuits, coke, pizza, takeaways. Fruit and veg rarely get a look in. By simply changing all those bad things for good things I hope the weight will drop off, at least initially.

what a completely ridiculous post.

If you really do believe that faddy diets "tend to work" then you are whistling in the wind and haven't a clue

Good luck DG, sounds like you're in it for the long-haul, I hope you get results. :)

You were spending more than £240 on yourself a month for food and drink?
shocking :/

Not really... I spend that much myself (at least). It's just a lack of care and planning really. :(
