Good Horror Flicks? (No Foreign Language)

id go for devils rejects as someone posted earlier and the earlier rob zombie flick called house of 1000 corpses.

Pretty much anything by john carpenter is a classic.

BTW on the subject of horror that new stephen king movie the mist is quite good i thought :)

Barely makes it as a horror film really, too much action, House of 1000 corpses is more horror IMO. Is just utterly utterly crap. A couple of "scary" scenes, but my goodness, the story, the acting, urgh.

Be fair though, when citing horror films in English we're clutching at straws.

I think you're being a bit harsh, neither of those films are that bad.

OK seriously.. what is the point in recommending this film? Yes it's good, scary, gory etc but it's in French. Quite irrevelant to the OP.

That's why they have this thing called "dubbing"...you may have heard about it ;) I know the OP said english but ANYONE who likes horror/gore/thrillers and doesn't watch this because it's french is cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Personally I prefer natural language and subtitles if i'm watching a foreign film, gives a more real feel to it.

The Descent really freaked me out, im not claustrophobic really, but watching that film made me feel that way!

hills have eyes 2 was rubbish imo guessing the first is similar to 2nd
avoid the descent, plot was predictable, and rubbish
jeepers creapers 2 i found creapy, and a lot better than the original
original texas chainsaw is brill, the remake was utter rubbish

Another vote for Tobe Hooper's 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre', don't bother getting the remake as its utter tripe!!
But tbh the Japanese and Koreans make the best horrors so your seriously limiting yourself by refusing to watch a sub-titled film!!

Yeah, one of the few films that has really scared the hell out of me :D

I watched the ring in the cinema once, when i was the only one in there (had a few hours to kill ;) ) .. Irrational but scared the hell out of me :(

Event Horizon? :o

The only two films which have ever really, really, really got to me were The Ring and The Grudge.

There is just something really sinister about those films. They feel really dark, cruel and unforgiving. *shudder*

Yes, those were the remakes. Turn the volume up loud.

I think it depends on if you are a visual or psychological horror. I prefer the latter, and think that foreign horror films offer some of the best in this area.

Some Asian films (from korea / japan etc.) worth watching:
Old Boy (utterly brilliant - in my top 10)
Audition (very disturbed)
Ju-On (The Grudge)
Ringu (the original Ring)
Dark Water

Other foreign titles worth considering: REC (spanish), The Orphanage (spanish), Hidden (french - more of a drama but still disturbing)

An English language horror... hmm, would probably have to be the recent 'Dawn of the Dead' remake. It's brilliant.

People who refuse to watch subtitled foreign films deserve to be shipped to America and forced to watch sequels to American Pie. You are missing so many quality films.

I thought Old Boy was pretty rubbish. Yet another 'amazing asian' masterpiece that was average at best. Confusing plot in the middle and far too much relies on the plot twist. The twist is the films only punch. Its just not enough.

I checked this film out after seeing this thread and tbh its just the same as the American films of this type but in French obviously.

I couldn't stop lolling at the end where she appears to be raving in the rain.

I agree with you on the most part, Ju-On, Audition, Oldboy are excellent! Haven't seen Dark Water, although Ringu was very dull imo.
DOTD remake is very good imo, the plot is great and stylisitically it's great, the zombies are excellent.
Over the seas is where you find some hidden gems, The Eye is a good watch and better than most hollywood thriller/horrors, and yet it's not the best thing to be shipped out of asia (gary glitter for example, the ****). Although, American Pie sequels are quite enteraining :o

Did you miss the whole extreme right subtext about the current state of affairs in france...google a little info and when you see the relevance to current affairs in paris, it becomes a far more chilling movie.

REC, its Spanish but I thought I would reccomend it anyway. Great film and a few jumpy moments in it too.
