I have been using AMD for a number of years and have now decided I cant wait any longer for them to get their act together.

I know a fair amount about the intel processor range and think that i am going to go for an E8600 E0 stepping so that I have a chance of breaking 4Ghz (A dream for an AMD user!)

the issue is the mobo. I definatly want sli and I know that the nvidia chipset based boards are less suited to overclocking and are seen as less reliable. but sli really is a must. (have only recently got new psu and second card so want to use my investment a bit more yet.)

I am liking the look of the EVGA 780i *** but really could do will some advice.
Must have's
1. SLI
2. Good overclocking
3. support all levels of core 2 range eg full fsb support
4. DDR2

Not going to worry about i7 yet, prices will be too high and I have the money in 2 weeks so want to spend it before i spend it on little rubbish things and reget not going for the upgrade.

Also any better CPU suggestions welcome and also need tips on a good HSF for overclocking with

Thanks all

why do you definably want SLI?
what size screen do you use?

will be much eaiser clocking on an Intel chipset tbh.

have only recently got new psu and second card so want to use my investment a bit more yet.

24" monitor

if I sell one card then the single 8800gt wont supply the oerformance i want

What about flogging the 2 8800GT's & getting a p45 chipset board & having 2 x 4850's in xfire instead

selling the GTs (which won't fetch half their worth) and buying a new crossfire setup seems a lot of hassle - granted the 4850cf setup is around 20-25% faster but seems a lot of hassle for only a moderate speed increase to me.

I agree, the only issue now is to get the kit i want and still come in on budget.

I want the E8600 as it seems the best chip out at the mo but I also want the EVGA 780i *** and need to get a hsf to oc the cpu with.

I only wanna spend £350 max so what should I cut down.

You could got for the E8400 instead - brings you well into budget and has a fair chance of getting 4gig tho not as good a chance as the E8600... even if you only hit 3.6gig on it its going to be considerably faster than what you have now.

very fair and good point.

do u think, at my price point it is worth trying to go quad. I have read so much about the q6600 but it seems like old tech now?

I'm very happy with my Q6600 - but very very few games take advantage of it - generally an E8x00 at 4gig would be far better than a Q6600 at 3.6gig. So unless you do a lot of stuff that takes advantage of multiple cores like media encoding, etc. I'd stick with dual core.

I think i agree.

I know I am flitting around the topics a bit but what is a good, resonably priced GSF that will not hold me back when ocing. I dont want to spend 50 quid which seems to be the price of the best ones

e8500 will def reach 4 ghz and dont bother with a quad nothing uses them properly yet, for games anyway

Get an E8500, but make sure it's the E0 version. If you want my honest opinion, the E8600 is a nice chip but it's overpriced. If you get an E8500 that doesn't hit 4GHz I'll eat my own footwear. Currently there's a few E8600's floating around that are not too impressive.
