I'm thinking of building my own server to host media files for my HTPC and to backup stuff from my main PC. I've got an Abit AB9 pro which has room for 8 SATA drives.

I've considering either.

1.RAID5 set up with 5*1TB HD's using the RAID controller on the mobo + 80GB drive for OS.
or
2. Using the WHS storage pool option which writes a file to two different HD's.

Any pro's/con's with either setup? I'm not looking for redudant backup, just storage.

id go for whs just for the reason that it is easy to expand, where as with raid it may be harder, plus what if the raid card dies it all gone, or a pain to find a new one, where as with whs you can just put them in a computer and get the information off, so less worries

I tried both ended up going the WHS route, happy i did tbh. RAID and ubuntu or server2003 is good, but WHS does a great job, is mucho easier and very expandable customisable since its essentially 2003 SBS.

When my rackmount case turns up, I'll be building my server and will probably be going with WHS. Ive considered a whole host of options, from hardware raid to Openfiler software raid etc, but I think WHS is the best options for me.

If you use things that are not meant for WHS, you can break it. So be careful.

Such as?

i think what he means is add other programs, for example turn it in to a tv server as well, torrenet box. basic the more you add the more chance it will break

Apparently, all the options like in the 'proper' server version such as DNS etc, WHS isnt designed to do it, and it can break it. WHS is only designed to run the parts in the Server console.
Its fine to install other programs, I run Twonkymedia on mine for serving my media.
