Morning folks,

I'm a little out of touch on the old grfx card front but was considering an upgrade. I currently have a 8800GTX running on an IP35, [email protected] with 4gb RAM. I play everything at 1920x1200 with the current main stays of TF2 and Warhammer Online.

Is it a worth while improvement to goto a 4870 X2 or is it worth waiting for something new from nVidia. (I usually stick with nVidia :) )

well the x2 is the "baddest man" on the planet right now, you could wait till middle or late september for the new gtx260................or buy an over clocked gtx280.
the gtx260 will not out perform the x2 and the over clocked gtx280 is nipping the heels of the x2....or wait till next year for Nvidia to fight back for the crown....and we all know that ATI have the little dragon waiting in the wings.

Is there anything you can't run properly? What res are you running at?

I have been stupid with upgrading for the last god knows how long. 8800GTX, 8800GT, 8800GTS (G92), HD 3850 Crossfire, HD 3870, HD 4870, HD 4850 Crossfire.....

All I can tell you is, I should have just stuck with the 8800GTX. This was gaming at 1680x1050. I have now settled on my 4850 XF solution, and will stick with it until 2010.

Seriously, unless you are struggling with anything (bar Crysis), just keep your current card. Its not as much fun as upgrading, but will save you money :)

Of course, I have no idea how well the GTX handles 1920x1200...

8800GTX here too! have had it since release day and it's doing me proud.

however on my 30" it does struggle a -liiiiittle- bit when i try and run the newest games on 2560 x 1600 at max graphics ;o

been thinking about the 4870 X2, though i might just wait till nvidia's next monster.

I have an almost identical system as the OP. Having a 24" screen I would like to play everything at max res. My older games run fine but newer ones like COD4 are only playable at a lower res.
At the highest res the FPS drops too much for my liking. I'm sure that newer games coming to the market will not be any less GPU intensive and that is driving my decision to get a 4870x2.

Oh, and the fact that I'm bored and need a project like watercooling a 4870x2 :D

lol 8800gtx to 8800 gt / gts is not an upgrade - it's a downgrade - becomes so obvious at higher res.

As for the OP I upgraded from a 8800gtx to 4870x2 and it is awesome. I also play at 1900x1200 - and i can see a huge difference in Age of Conan where the 8800gtx was struggling all maxed out (distance, AA, grass, shader...), with the 4870x2 i never seen it dip below 40fps and average around 60fps, to give you an idea the 8800gtx was 5fps low and average of 20-25fps).

I too have been an nvidia boy for years (last ATi I had was ATI9800pro) As far as the "new" nvidia coming out in September, I wouldn't hold my breath. It's not a new card - just a revision, and I can't see it improve that significantly + drivers for ATi will have surely matured by then.

I know, but when someone becomes obsessed over GPU's, CPU's, getting the best bang for buck, getting the most out of something, etc, etc, it can prompt some seriously deluded decision making :)

I hope I have now learned, stick with what you got until you are struggling to play something and are gauranteed at least a 75% boost in performance in EVERYTHING.

Otherwise you can land up chasing after minor improvements and spending a lot of money doing it, when you could be enjoying gaming.

Crysis is the thorn in my side (and most peoples I assume) which is stupid, because I know what no matter what I do I am not going to get it running how I want :)

Wasn't trying to be condescending m8, just the 8800gt hysteria always made me laugh => granted it was awesome value for the money, but never was a high end card imo.

If Crysis is your cup of tea then nvidia is probably the best solution, since the ATi seem to struggle there (comparatively) - seems crytek and Nvidia are joined at the hip. But if you like other games too, then ATi is a no brainer today.

as a guy with a similar setup to yourself, I'm to thinking of getting the x2 and crossfire later on. What sort of 3dmark06 are you getting?

Definetly not wait no longer because the best cards for possibly this year or the next few months are out right now.
The x2 is just a monster, if you want everything running at a good fps @ 2560 res etc then this is the card, where as i only use 1680x1050 so this card is a overkill but thats the addictive things about computers isnt it? getting good fps and having new hardware.
where as if i was a sencible person who wanted to save money id of just stuck with my hd2900xt because it ran everything fine and instead of 100-180fps on counterstrike source with my hd2900 i now get about 400-500 @1680, so is it worth 375 pounds that i paid for my new card?

my awnser yes, but a realistic awnser is no :p if your card runs the games you play at good fps, then dont waste the money.... unless your name is bob.
which my name isnt but i still baught one of these beasts anyway ;P

Right ! You're all evil and I caved. Should be here tomorrow so go pick it pack it and send out it please OCUK!

(wonder if my 8800GTX will sell?)

I dont really see SLI as an option because I don't like their intel chipsets. Silly buggers would probably make much more money if they opened up SLI, but thats another discussion.

Yeah, everything else is silky smooth now (well, with the exception of Quake wars, which just seems fussy, sometimes being lovely and smooth and sometimes being jerky and stuttery).

I am now going to try and run my system completely at stock. It's fast enough for everything with vsync on and when I eventually need a boost, then I will OC.

Though I think now that I have decided what I will be sticking with, I should probably do a clean install because of the amount of swapping and changing of all the different components have done.
