I was stopped by the police last week with my 18 month old son in the back of the car. It transpired that my insurance company had cancelled my insurance as I had not provided adequate proof of my no claims discount – without actually telling me or refunding me the years money I had paid up front... but that’s another rant.

The copper could obviously tell that I had no idea up till that moment I wasn’t insured, but told me that he couldn’t let me drive the car any further and had to issue me with 6 points and a fine.

Just as I was trying to work out what I was going to do next he volunteered to take me and my son – with car seat etc - to the nursery about a mile away. Then he drove me back to the car to pick up my work things and another 12 miles to drop me at work. He then had to turn around and drive BACK to my car to meet with the guy who was taking it to be impounded. While he was giving me a lift he explained that there was a good chance of getting my 6 points back, and how to go about complaining to my insurance company.

In short the guy deserves an award for being the most considerate copper it has ever been my pleasure to meet.

Good story, go to the local cop shop and inform his superior of his generosity in person.

People like this don't get credited enough!

Have you thought of writing in with a letter to his superiors saying what a credit he is to the force?

Edit: beaten :(

would have been more considerate to let you ring insurance company there and then. sort some insurance out and let you go on you merry way

To be fair though a problem like that could take days to fix so the policeman just got the job done the quickiest and still as helpfull as possible. You hear about the police in similar situations and not helping the poor person at all!

He didn't HAVE to. You don't HAVE to take part in the Fixed-Penalty Notice Scheme, you can opt to be reported and sent to court. You could have been reported for the matter (at the time, not now). Strictly speaking, the officer is supposed to ask you if you wish to participate in it (this never happens, most police officers probably don't even know this).

It would probably have been better as he could have reported you, you could then have appeared at court and explained the situation, the matter would then have been dropped. Now you have the task of paying the fine and taking the points, then trying to get them all back which will be a huge headache.

However, I only know this to be true with the Metropolitan police, I have no idea how other constabularies work.

Despite this, he was a very good officer.
