The Police are Considerable and helpful! !Shocker!

would have been more considerate to let you ring insurance company there and then. sort some insurance out and let you go on you merry way

We called my insurance from the car - that's when I found out that I wasn't insured. AFAIK he then has to act.

Tbh Beren that kind of thing happens quite often but good press doesn't interest anyone.

Was he a traffic copper ? I seem to doubt it as they are incapable of kind gesture.

;)

It was nice of him, but what would have happened had he been given a real call while playing taxi driver. ;)

Yup he was a genuine honest to god traffic copper - I thought they were extinct these days too.

I will definitely be writing in a letter to the police - might copy it to the local paper as well.

Good stuff though.

Although not traffic, I look for similar outcomes when circumstances dictate.

I am not in the mindset of criminalising people who shouldn't be criminalised.

Swift.

They had the gall to send me an email 2 days ago trying to sell me breakdown cover as well.
"As a valued SwiftCover Customer we wanted to remind you that we also offer first class Breakdown Cover.
We have different levels of cover to suit your needs and your pocket, starting from as little as 32.99 GBP. If you breakdown you will have the reassurance that Swiftcover Rescue will get you and your family on the road again swiftly."

Just as I was trying to work out what I was going to do next he volunteered to take me and my son – with car seat etc - to the nursery about a mile away. Then he drove me back to the car to pick up my work things and another 12 miles to drop me at work. He then had to turn around and drive BACK to my car to meet with the guy who was taking it to be impounded. While he was giving me a lift he explained that there was a good chance of getting my 6 points back, and how to go about complaining to my insurance company.

In short the guy deserves an award for being the most considerate copper it has ever been my pleasure to meet.

tbh, thats way to much hassle

If i was him, id just tell you to have a good night and drive safely.

Go back in the police car put on some techno!

Swift were pretty good in contacting us when we didn't send our proof of no claims off (I'd forgotten). Not only did I get about 3 emails they also sent a letter through the post saying my insurance would be cancelled if I didn't send it over to them.

EDIT: here are the NCB bits of the emails:

Email 1:
If you have earned a No Claims Discount, you must send us an original proof as soon as you can to swiftcover.com, Swift Court, Fudan Way, Stockton-On-Tees, TS17 6EN (your last renewal quote will be fine, as long as it shows your NCD entitlement - please write your Swiftcover policy number at the top of it).

Email 2:
Dear xxxx
Thank you once again for clicking on swiftcover.com for your car insurance.
This is just a swift reminder to let us see your original proof of No Claims Discount (your invitation to renew document from your previous insurer will be fine, as long as it shows your NCD entitlement). Please do not send us your original Certificate of Motor Insurance as you may need this for future reference.

Email 3:
Dear xxx
We note from our records that your proof of No Claims Discount has not been received. As it is a condition of your swiftcover.com policy, please send your proof as soon as possible.
The original renewal notice from your previous insurer will be acceptable, as long as it shows your NCD entitlement. Please do not send us your original Certificate of Motor Insurance as you may need this for future reference. The proof must be no more than 12 months old, issued by a UK insurer, it must display your name as the policyholder and the NCD should be earned on a private car.
Should we not receive your proof of NCD by 07/03/2008, we will unfortunately have to reduce your NCD to zero years or, in some circumstances, even cancel your policy. Please send your proof of NCD by email or just pop it in the post with your policy number at the top and send it to swiftcover.com, Swift Court, Fudan Way, Stockton-On-Tees, TS17 6EN.

Pretty unlucky that you didn't get any emails (I'm sure i would have got more if i hadn't sent it off before they cancelled it), and the letter must have got lost in the post too!

No sensible police officer would ever do this. If he was then to drive off, uninsured, with a child in the car and then had a crash, that offier would be in trouble as he has approved you to drive on uninsured. The officer has a duty of care to that driver, the child and anyone else that may be involved in a crash that could occur.
